$14 ESTA fee & changes to Dutch citizenship law
September saw two changes in law that are of interest to Dutch-Americans and created a lot of discussion on
our Facebook page. U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced that effective September 8, 2010 a fee of $14 will be charged for Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) applications. An approved
ESTA application is required to
use the Visa Waiver Program. This program allows visitors from several
countries, including the Netherlands, to travel to the United States for
up to 90 day without applying for a visa under certain conditions (

Also, the changes to the Dutch citizenship law that were approved earlier this year will take effect on October 1st, 2010. People born outside the Netherlands before 1985 to a Dutch mother and a non-Dutch father may now be eligible for Dutch citizenship. Citizenship is not granted automatically, these “Latente Nederlanders” need to file an application to gain Dutch nationality (

Vandaag -- genever and bitterballen in New York City
In July
Vandaag, a genever bar with a Dutch theme, opened in the East Village in New York City.
Vandaag serves Dutch snacks and food such as
bitterballen and
hete bliksem and carries a large selection of genever cocktails and other drinks. ‘Vandaag’ is a Dutch word that means ‘today’. Manager Brendan Spiro
describes this a reference to the seasonality of the ingredients that
are used on the menu...

Dutch products in Kingston, NY
"A recent visit to Adams Fairacre Farms in Kingston, New York was a bit
of a Dutch food vacation. This grocery store in upstate New York carries
a large number of unusual international items including quite a few
Dutch products. Originally a roadside farm stand in the early 20th
century, Adams has grown to a three-store chain with other locations in
Poughkeepsie and Newburgh...

New Dutch-American novel: Tulip Days
Tulip Days is a new novel by Rhiannon van der Munnik about an
American woman who moves to the Netherlands to follow her love. Her life
experiences and complicated relationships make for an intriguing read,
and it’s interesting to read how a poet from California experiences life
in Harlingen, Friesland...
