NVivo is a qualitative data analysis (QDA) computer software package produced by Lumivero (formerly called QSR International). NVivo is used across a diverse range of fields, including social sciences such as anthropology, psychology, communication, sociology, as well as fields such as forensics, tourism, criminology and marketing.
NVivo is intended to help users organize and analyze non-numerical or unstructured data. Its developers state that it helps qualitative researchers to organize, analyze and find insights in unstructured or qualitative data like interviews, open-ended survey responses, journal articles, social media and web content, where deep levels of analysis on small or large volumes of data are required.[1]
The software allows users to classify, sort and arrange information; examine relationships in the data; and combine analysis with linking, shaping, searching and modeling. The software can identify trends and cross-examine information in various ways using its search engine and query functions.[2] NVivo accommodates a wide range of research methods, including network and organizational analysis, action or evidence-based research, discourse analysis, grounded theory, conversation analysis, ethnography, literature reviews, phenomenology, mixed methods research and the Framework methodology.[3]
Tom Richards and Lyn Richards developed NUD*IST (Non-numerical Unstructured Data Indexing, Searching and Theorizing), a software program designed for detailed analysis of unstructured textual data, with the initial version for DEC-10 in 1981.[4][5][6] In 1997, an updated version of NUD*IST was named N4.
In 1994, Qualitative Solutions and Research Pty Ltd was set up at and then spun out of La Trobe University to support the development and marketing of NUD*IST, and shortly after the release of N4 (NUD*IST Rev 4) it began working on a ground-up redesigned sibling product, with many more features, initially named NUD*IST Alive then branded as NVivo.[7]
Development of the original product continue alongside the new one, with the final version, N6, being consolidated into NVivo 7 in 2006. NVivo for Teams, which allows multiple users on a server to work on a project at the same time, was first released in 2010. NVivo was released for Mac in 2014. Mac versions of the software tend to have fewer features.[8]
For individual and small groups (less than 9 individuals), take advantage of the most recent updates and software enhancements by purchasing the latest version here.
For larger groups and institutional/enterprise users, subscription options at volume rates are offered that secure the latest features as they are released. Lumivero's Support team is committed to your success using our software and actively supports the two previous versions of the most current version.
NVivo enables researchers to collate, organize and manage a range of digital data: Audio files, videos, photos, texts, and data sets. Users are able to code data and identify themes in their work using various analytical tools. They may memo and annotate digital contents. They may search for and retrieve data; they may link data.
K-State recently purchased a campus site license for NVivo 10, a qualitative and mixed methods data analytics software, for its faculty, staff, administrators, and graduate students, who may download the software from the protected site after signing in with their eID/password. To activate the software, users will need the unique K-State license key. The software is only for that individual's professional use and may be installed on up to two computing devices, typically a desktop machine and a laptop.
A Mac version is due out in late 2013; this software version is going through testing currently. At the time of the Mac version release, all those on this K-State site license may download the Mac version as well. More details about that download will be forthcoming closer to the official release date.

Q: How about home users?
A: In terms of home users QSR now have multiple deployment models so that you have a bit of choice as to the best way to do it. Details can be found here: -nv.qsrinternational.com/20/win/Content/about-nvivo/ela-admin.htm
Q: How about overseas researchers?
A: If you have a need to support researchers outside of UK&I then please contact Simon Taylor at QSR (s.ta...@qsrinternational.com) for details on options. Essentially however it's not about where the software is, it is about where the users are, so remotely accessing the software from overseas is included in this.
Q: Is there a download link for the installer that we can apply to the version on our network?
A: The version that you can download from is always the latest release (requires log in to the portal)
QSR can put organisations in touch with an expert team of trainers and consultants to help users get the most out of their QSR software. A range of services can be provided, from one-on-one consulting to group workshops on site. These services are not included in the Chest agreement and are provided for an additional fee. Contact QSR directly via trai...@qsrinternational.com for further information and pricing.
From time to time, QSR will release service packs for its software to address issues or provide minor enhancements. These service packs are available free of charge to all NVivo users, and can be downloaded from the QSR website.
Major Software Releases
An important benefit of the Chest Agreement is that you receive free major software upgrades at the time they are released. So while your NVivo Agreement is current for example, you'll receive every major version of NVivo that is released
Licence keys will be sent to the named Admin Contact at the Licensed Site by QSR International only after the completed order form has been submitted, processed and forwarded to QSR or your nominated reseller.
In following years QSR will send licence keys to the named contact within 2 weeks of the anniversary date of the licence. If you have not received your licence keys within this time, please contact Chest Help or your dedicated Account Director at QSR International, Simon Taylor, on 01925 358101.
We will shortly be making Citavi, the all-in-one referencing and note-taking application designed for academics at all levels and in all disciplines, available through Chest. The Chest Order, together with the Licence Terms and Conditions, and any exceptions listed below, create a legally binding contract between your institution, organisation or company and the Licensor. Therefore please read the terms and conditions carefully and only submit a Chest Order if its terms and conditions are acceptable to your institution, organisation or company and you have the authority to make the financial commitment shown.
This Site licence is subject to the terms and conditions for the Standard Chest Licence for Software (June 2011). There are some specific rules that apply to the use of Software outside the territory of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland which are detailed at the bottom of this page.
Jisc will invoice Licensed Institutions for the initial fee on receipt of a completed order. Sites will then be invoiced annually three months in advance of the anniversary of their licence start date until the end of their chosen Commitment Period.
At the end of the Period of Agreement, if there is no new Agreement between QSR and Chest or a new Agreement directly between the Licensed Site and QSR, then Licensed Sites are required to remove all copies of QSR Products from their systems - including personal machines which have been loaded with a copy of the software - at the expiry of their Licence (Commitment) Period.
