They were disassembling the screen as I passed on my way in to work
this morning (11/25/08). The bottom row of sheet metal was on its way
down. There were numbers on each pair of posts supporting the screen
tower structure, I suppose to make for easier disassembly.
I suppose as I drive by on my way home today, I'll be looking at a
skeleton that I was excited to see not so long ago. It was so much
different when I knew that the progress that was occurring was going
to provide fond memories to so many. This time, I'm overcome by a
sense of sadness that this landmark will be no more.
A different kind of "progress" is taking place now. Time marches on.
Maybe the land that once was home to an old service station and a
drive-in theater (flea market, gun shop, etc.) will return to being
the home of a newer service station...or a pharmacy...or some type of
mixed-use development. (Mixed use meaning mixed between residential
and commercial, not various commercial such as flea market, gun shop,
etc.)
Whatever comes to the corner of Club Blvd. and Geer St., I wish them
success. If they have a sense of pride in their community and
dedication to what they do, they will be well on their ways.
Take care, y'all,
-Stephen
