to Durham Screen Savers
Hey Y'all,
First, my apologies for the recent spam on this message group. Until
now, Google has been great about keeping the spam off of the groups.
(If you didn't receive the recent spam, it's probably appropriately
filed in your spam folder.) Due to these recent spam issues, I have
set the group so that all messages are moderated prior to their
distribution. This means that I will get a chance to read it and
either approve or reject it. This way, the group stays on topic and
free from things no one really wants in their mailbox anyways.
Second, the roadwork at the corner of Club & Geer is complete with new
automated traffic signals, curbing, and for some reason, guardrails.
I imagine the road crews were trying to adapt the new traffic pattern
to the old drive-in, regardless of it's future use.
Lastly, a big Griffin Associates Realtors "for sale" sign went up at
the drive-in. Shortly thereafter a "pending" sign was placed over top
of that. According the the web page, the property was listed for $1.5
million. I really doubt someone bought a $1.5 million property to use
as a drive-in.
Admittedly, my attempt to be a "Screen Saver" through the creation of
this group and website was halfhearted to say the least. However, I
firmly believe that the days of the Starlite being located at the
corner of Geer & Club were numbered. The light and noise pollution
and traffic from the neighboring shopping center would have
increased. The offers Mr. Bob would have received would have
increased as well. This would have been followed by a brand new
Starlite a ways down the road, and a McDonalds or CVS or something
where the theater once stood.
My hope is that this isn't the last page in Durham's commercial
outdoor movie history. My hope is that there will be some nostalgic
baby boomers (or any other group of nostalgic people) out there with
the money and, more importantly, the passion to tackle a drive-in
project. Until then, perhaps I'll be satisfied with hosting another
backyard movie night. (Or a drive to Eden or Henderson...)
What does the future hold? Who knows!
