Good evening, all.
This email covers a bunch of different items, so I'll start with an outline so you can skip to your favorite parts.
Herein we have:
- Piney Wood Courts
- July 15 Indoor Singles Tourney
- July 20 DAPP meeting
- New Net at Bethesda
- 2024 DAPP Elections
And now the gory details...
1. Piney Wood Courts
Today the Piney Surface PASSED its 'proof roll'!
Basically they filled this big truck up with rocks and drove it everywhere while we humans followed it around.
The surface was extremely stable. The construction folks were quite happy with the results and will move on to pouring the concrete layer very soon.
I offered to teach the construction folks how to play pickleball once the courts are done. They seemed eager to learn. I expect you all to help. :-)
2. July 15 Indoor Singles Tourney
DPR is running an Indoor Singles Tourney on Saturday, July 15 at Walltown for men's and women's 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0. Singles is a whole nuther game and this is your chance to try it out while in air-conditioning. What's not to like?
3. July 20 DAPP meeting
The 2nd quarter meeting of Durham Area Pickleball Players will be held at Bethesda on July 20 at 6pm on Court #1. A week or two prior I'll be sending out a survey to ask for your priorities on how to spend the money you contributed for Piney. Look for the survey link in an upcoming email, fill it out, and come to the meeting to make your voice heard.
4. New 'Trial' Net at Bethesda
DAPP has been purchasing 'community' nets for Bethesda for the last several years, to the tune of six nets @ around $200 dollars every 9-12 months. In an attempt to make the nets last longer, we've been experimenting with nets that can easily be moved rather than repeatedly assembled and disassembled.
The key features of this net are that the upright end poles cannot cave inwards (so the top of the net will always be taut), and the net is very light (so it's easy to move to the side).
This net costs nearly $400, but we're hoping that it will be better and last longer than the ones we've been buying.
BTW, if you have strong thoughts about nets let me know and I'll put you on the Net Research and Selection Committee.
5. 2024 DAPP Elections
2024 will be here before you know it. DAPP elections for next year's Officers and Steering Committee members will be held late this year. We'll put together a nominating committee by early fall and let you know how you can get yourself nominated for an official DAPP job. Just think, you could be writing these emails!
That's all the news that's fit to print. Stay safe on this evening.
Best,
Sandi Metz
2024 DAPP President
