Good morning on this first brisk morning of fall.
Hope you brought the plants in.

In this newsletter
  1. DAPP Elections
  2. Piney Wood Status
  3. Upcoming Tournaments
  4. Minutes of the October Meeting
1) DAPP Elections
Elections for 2024 DAPP officers are imminent.  See the elections page for the gory details.

The TLDR; version is:
  • All nine board seats are up for election.
  • You can nominate yourself or someone else via this form.
  • All nominees are assumed to wish to either hold that office, or to be on the committee chaired by that office.
  • The nominating committee will connect all the candidates for each specific office, and ask them to decide among themselves who will be the office holder and who will sit on that committee.
  • This will result in one or more candidates for each board seat.
  • The nominating committee will present these candidates to the DAPP membership by November 8.
  • Voting will be December 8-15.
As you can see, anyone who shows the slightest interest can participate in DAPP.  If you have an idea, or a grand vision, or even a small complaint, this is how you turn your words into action.  Join us.

2) Piney Wood Status
Piney is so close to being done I can taste it.  They're finishing up the last bits.

You'll know when you can play there because everyone will go crazy.  We need to be patient for a little while longer, but it is time to start getting excited.  The grand opening party is very near.

DAPP donated $22,280.25 to the city to get additional court dividers installed during construction.  This money was raised via the 20212022 and 2023 Bull City Open tournaments.

The folks at Durham Parks and Rec worked very hard to get the Piney contract amended so that permanent court dividers could be purchased and installed with our money.  Thank our DPR peeps next time you see them.  This was not a small task.

Guided by your answers on the 2023 survey, DAPP will spend the 2023 Piney GoFundMe money on windscreens and seating.  We have around $5,000 earmarked for this.

Shade is our next priority, which may require another round of fundraising.  Stand by to let your wallets fall open for that.

We hope to organize some sponsorship opportunities for Piney (your name on a bench/shade shelter type stuff).  More about this once the new board gets seated.  If this interests you, start loosening your wallet now.

In answer to your constant questions (me?  I never run out of patience, o no not me) about how courts will be allocated at Piney, I can only say that yes, DPR is making a plan, and no, it can't possibly be perfect at this point. Expect some growing pains.  Piney will open, we'll use it for a while, and only then will it become obvious what we should have done.

Adjustments will be made!  Plans will evolve!  Be patient while they do!

If you have strong feelings about how play at Piney should be organized, see elections above.

3) Upcoming Tournaments
There are a few spots left in this year's Nutcracker tournament at Bethesda.
Not to brag, but you're gonna have to get up early to beat my costume.
Come out and join the fun on December 1 and 2 even if you're not playing.  It's a delightful way to end the year.

Speaking of elves, someone who shall remain unnamed has been keeping the the DurhamPickleball.org calendar updated with upcoming local and regional tournaments.

2024 is pending, but if you look back through 2023 you'll see a bunch of tournaments in which you'll wish you'd played.  The calendar is a great resource. Please join me in giving thanks to the generous person who keeps it up-to-date.

4) Minutes of the October Meeting
Find them (and all other meeting minutes) here.

You might also be interested in DAPP's financials.  We have $6,366.32 on hand, of which about $5k is allocated to buy things for Piney.

That's it for this morn.  Stay warm, and I'll be in your inbox with 2024 Board candidates and exhortations to vote very, very soon.

Cheers,
Sandi
