All,
Status of Piney Wood
I have it on good understanding that the following items are true even though they're not yet officially detailed on the Durham City Council's website.
- At the last Work Session council members approved the additional funding needed to complete the work at Piney Wood.
- The plan is to bundle the Piney funding request into a single agenda item with other requests for which there are also no objections.
- This bundled agenda item will be voted on at the June 5 Council Meeting.
- Council is expected to approve the entire bundle at that time.
Additionally (and In case you need a stronger positive indicator), Durham Parks and Recreation has begun coordinating with DAPP to plan both a Piney Grand Opening Party and an Inaugural Tournament.
This is happening. :-)
When the City Council June 5 meeting agenda comes out later this week I"ll be back in touch with instructions about how to fill out the form to
submit a written comment showing your support. Meantime, bask in the glow of a job well done, and thanks to everyone who pitched in to support this cause.
Spending The Money We Raised
The city has fully funded the court renovation and a new outer fence.
DAPP has raised (between the recent GoFundMe and three years of Bull City Open tournaments) over $25,000. This money will be spent on accessories for Piney: things like windscreens, additional fence gates, barriers between courts, shade structures, seating, etc. I'll be sending out a survey in the next few weeks to enlist your help in setting priorities.
Getting Involved
The next Durham Area Pickleball Players meeting will be held July 20 at 6pm at Bethesda Park. Plan to attend!
DAPP is your organization, and you can be actively involved. Just reading this far in the email isn't really enough. :-) There's lots happening that would benefit from many hands and differing opinions.
Enjoy this last cool, rainy day before summer arrives.
Best,
Sandi
