Its called West Chapel Hill Street where it meets Kent and University.
The Null and Void was in the basement of what used to be the Duke and Duchess restaurant (the original restaurant name that had a kitchen in the basement). N and V took it after that I believe. It went for some time then closed. The building was empty for some time, then Emerald Florist was in there. This is where the current Durham Community Land Trustees is now. Right next to it was the Chicken Hut. Everyone in the west end referred to as the Heroin Hut. It was a true drive thru!

The Sallam Cultural Center and Jazz Club was up the street. The West End had the West End Clean up crew, a bunch of kids in the neighborhood who got free food from the Sallam for keeping the neighborhood clean. The West End was the cleanest low income neighborhood in Durham then.
When the Sallam closed A Wandering Feast took over the kitchen. We were in that building for 5 years. We ran AWF there and loved it but moved for the same reason as Emerald Florist - gangs in the west end were bad in the mid to late 80's. When AWF moved out, the building was refurbished and the Durham Food Coop moved in.

All on the trolley line, running on the "ridge" at the "bend" which everyone referred to the wide bend in the road at Kent and WCHS that was wide so the trolley could negotiate the turn onto Kent. The other bend in the line is at the other end of Kent all heading toward Lakewood park.
I did a documentary film on the Sallam with interview's with Billy Stevens, Roger Tygard and Brother Yusef. Durham's now famous musicians got their start at the Sallam.
(and they had the best fish sandwich on Wednesday)

man !...the things this website (Endangered Durham) has dug up ! heck
w/ the old photos, I've just had a real trip down memory lane with the
old TOPS DRIVE-IN menu ! Available in the car by "hop" or go inside
and eat (or even stand outside the car and eat when you weren't with a
    girl)
    Thanx Eric for discovering this.

I'm sorta on a mission to find info about the NULL AND VOID night spot
(mainly for college students - and lying high-schoolers) to do a story
on and possibly a painting or some pictorial representation of. Not
an important historical locale nor event but gooood history here !
It was located in the basement area of the bldg that stands on the
corner of Chapel Hill and Campus Drive ( or whatevet it's called- I'd
have to go look again) where Chapel Hill St curves to the left and
    goes toward Lakewood area.
(is also the old trolley route...dang, will I just leave the trolley
    thing alone ?)
Or just point blank ask GK - he probably already knows all about it.
    thanx again
    Charlie

thanx Jeff – You're of course right about the N&V location.  My exposure to the music scene at the Null ' was a bit less than the "sedate and cultural" Yusef and all.

"Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts" were the big draw there. They sort of started there and recorded a live performance album with a picture of their performance on

the cover.  This was in 1961-62…man that really sounds…. a long time ago.

They were a blast to say the least …and it was loud.

thanx again for more info here

Charlie

Jeff, thanks for these reminiscences.  I knew some of this and it seems almost subconsciously known.  I think Charlie's reply is funny; I was at Duke from '64-68', and though I was a sheltered good boy, I recall how Doug Clark and Hot Nuts were a popular, let's be bad, group to go see for Dukies.  What a fun and complex time it was.

I think we need to keep on bring the history of Durham music to the surface to show how rich this place has been and is.  As you mention Brother Yusef, I keep running into the fact that Branford Marsalis live here and often jams with folks.  Do you know Will McFarlane?

Keep growing stuff and cooking, man,

Steve
