All,

A semi-serious idea given that the Oscars have just occurred in the real world [TM], I thought it
would be good to open nominations for the Treasure Trap Oscars 2004, to be awarded in a glittering
ceremony in the Summer Term. (aka on the balcony in Kingsgate with beers/soft drinks and a chocolate
reward).

--

Current categories are as follows:

Best Moment of the Academic Year 2003-2004 (anything TT related really)

Best Adventure (including mini-linears)

Best Ref (including both the interactive ref team and refs from adventures)

Best Character

Best Fresher Character

Best Monster/NPC

Best Fresher Monster/NPC

Best Comedy Accent

Best Costume

Best Make - up

Best Prop(s)

Needs categories for:

Most dedicated- defined by lowest exam results

Most drunk- Open-ended. Could be stupid noises, could be speeches.
Could just be Dunk

Biggest Downtimes- Always popular

Most Outrageous- Extremely open-ended, has to be stupid yet in keeping
with the society's core objectives.

Most Bitchy- Judged by amount of time spent on it, harshness of insults
and any known breakdowns/ crises of faith that have been caused.

Most Dan-like - I just want to win

Other than that, I really like it, although perhaps alcohol, not
chocolate. But that's just me. Or is it?

This is a bloody brilliant idea ( much better than your solution to

Great idea! I think most of the nominations will be of stuff from recent
interactives/adventures due to poor memory, but yeah... nice idea...

My points weren't cheap. They were of a higher quality than most of my

How about being able to break weapons through unpulled blows? Proof
that weapons practics does not equate to safe.

First time I've heard of it happening, it makes for a fair safety record,
one broken weapon in the last couple of years (broken by a blow rather
than just falling apart that is)...

Weapons practice equates to safer than never going to one and thus not
learning how to pull blows in the first place...

Nevertheless it has happened and it's happened with someone people are
lauding as a great fighter who attends most (all?) weapons practices.

I believe this to be very much untrue. You can't just tar everyone that
doesn't attend weapons practice with the same brush - just because a
core group of dickheads refuse to learn to pull blows doesn't mean the
others can't do it.

Doesn't this make sense? Tom probably does more LARP fighting than any of
us (probably bar Si), and thus statistically a weapon was more likely to
break in his hands at some point due to fatigue on the core.

If they never attend weapons practice they'll never learn though.

As the person who Tom broke his sword on, I think it's pretty pathetic to
bring up that one incident. Tom is a great guy, really fun to fight
against, and the accident in question was just that - an accident. I was
running towards him, he did a swinging leg shot, and I ran into it, making
it much harder than it should've been.

The chances of being hurt by someone who regularly attends weapons
practice are, I suspect, a hell of a lot less than those of being hurt by
someone who doesn't.

*sigh*

That's the sort of argument that's almost not worth bothering with. However, the tone of the post
has angered me so I will.

1) Have you told Tom that you think he's an unsafe fighter? I was diplomatic enough not to name
names, but if you feel he's that out of control that you have to character assasinate him on a
public newsgroup, then that's fine. However, in my judgement you're completely wrong and your
previous post looks like a pathetic and petulant swipe at him for reasons unknown.

2) This is one incident, which I'm sure he was sorry for. Can you look me in the eye and tell me
you've never hit someone too hard? I know I couldn't say that - in spite of much practice, I still
occassionally over hit. How would you like a post like that directed at you? Using you as an
embarassing example in public? I would never be cruel enough to do that - especially on a thread
where you were being praised. He's generally alot safer than at least a dozen people I could name -
including several who regularly attend weapons practices. Why not pick one of them to publicly
humiliate?

3) You've ruined a perfectly nice thread with that post. Sorry if you can't take the generally
praising tone of the thread so far, but some of us were looking to highlight the many positives that
TT has had this year. I was hoping to hear some really good stories of adventures etc. but obviously
that's not going to happen after such a needlessly acidic response... ...which could easily have
been placed on the 'Armourers Announcement' thread anyway.

Sorry for the angry response, but I'm pissed off that a positive thread has descended into juvenile
sniping for *+*+*absolutely no reason*+*+*. This is a newsgroup not a childrens playground.

PS Practice makes perfect. Don't try and argue that practicing will not decrease the chances of
causing injury etc.

Dear Zoe,

> How about being able to break weapons through unpulled blows? Proof
> that weapons practics does not equate to safe.

Weapons break. They can break because something heavy gets dropped on
them or if someone steps on them - generally, however, I'd prefer they
break through use, instead of misuse.
So, it's generally preferable that weapons break in combat. As long as
the person using the weapon retires the weapon as soon as they realise
that it's become damaged, that's fine.
Any weapon that's regularly used will break - the substantial gaffa
weapons used in weapon's practice seem to have a half-life of about
about 4-5 months. Several times, I've hit someone only to have the
weapons slide/shift oddly/gaffa come away/otherwise break.
It's good to check weapon's before you use them, but it's pretty usual
to only realise that the weapon should be retired for fixing once you
hit someone with it.
If anything, using the long-suffering weapons at weapon's practice
teaches people to check the weapons before and after use and not simply
trust that they are fine.

The point is, people who go to weapon's practice aren't safe, but they
all get safer.
People who don't go to weapon's practice don't get any safer. Moreover,
since you won't necessarily see them fight very often, you won't know
whether they are safe/unsafe.

People who don't fight much tend to be very tentative - up until they
are in a fight they want to win/out of their depth in a confusing
situation (e.g. big line fight encounter/line crumbles people are
running in every direction) at which point they are inclined to lash out
randomly.
Everyone does it - the only thing which stops you from doing it is:
(i) Freeze and do nothing
(ii) Panic and lash out randomly (unsafe!)
(iii) Train until you act automatically in a safe fashion (e.g. for me,
this generally means throwing up effective blocks until I can back off
and buy enough time start thinking rationally)

Dear Zoe,

I would politely ask that if you believe my fighting style to be
unsafe, or have any comments regarding LARP fighting safety that you
wish to be taken into account in weapons practices, you should e-mail
me (t.a.s...@durham.ac.uk) or Si.

I'll admit it's a possibility but I think if that were going to happen
then, after 20 years, we'd have seen it more than once.

I disagree. The weapons practices I've attended focus on fighting
techniques, not safety.

I'll not continue this here, I've taken it to e-mail with Tom. I'm

It wasn't my intention to lower the tone, so to speak, but to bring up
something I believed needed to be said. However, my words could have
been chosen better but I've come to the conclusion that it's best to say
things in a straight fashion than to leave things open to
misinterpretation. In this case, that was the wrong method to use.

We have - most weapons get damaged in combat - hence most weapons break
in combat and on _someone_.
Most of the 12 or so weapon's practice weapons have broken and been
regaffa - some of them have broken when I've been using them. Generally,
you hit someone, they go "ow!" more than you would normally expect, you
look carefully at weapons, then take it to someone who knows how the end
of the weapon should feel, they suck air through their teeth and make
other 'knowing' sounds and suggest that it be retired pending regaffa-ing.

But unsafe fighting is unsafe due to lack of contol (not being able to
control where the blow lands or how much force it lands with). Lack of
control in fighting is lack of technique to control the fighting.

Renaud and Andrea's props for the mage bash... Alternatively the acid-gun

Any of the freshers who helped clean the armoury out at the beginning of

Karnak, the king of the Urca and greatest warrior in Albion. And yes.
Actually, it's a toss up for me between Will as Karnak, Will as the
Demon Prince of Temptation, Will as "Shoota" the Vetch, Will as a
Vivamortian and Will as Daevo, the Prophet of Little COmpton
(deceased). Will's just great at Monstering.

The Vetch Warpfire thrower, another Andy J gaffatape special, complete
with Vetch runes reading "caution! Emits hot liquid!", "point this

it started melting in the rain, though.
