I discovered the Sarasate on Gil Shaham's Devil's Dance CD (great: everybody go buy it! Now!), and I was wondering why it isn't widely played. Possibly because of its lack of popularity and pyrotechnics compared to the same master's Carmen Fantasy (after a more famous opera)?
What editions of the Sarasate do you know to exist? I've found Ricci (Schirmer Great Performer's Ed.), 1981, in a collection with 5 others, and an old old Berlin, Bote, and G. Brock (in no particular order: I forgot it; sorry), 188-.
Wow sarasate has a fantasy on faust?? I did NOT know that. But i have heard Wieniawski's faust fantasy before, which i fell in INSTANT love. i just luv that piece to death!! i tried to learn it but my teacher actually discouraged. The reason being is that it's too long of a show piece (about 15 minutes or longer) and it's not as effective as some other show pieces out there. I ended up learning scherzo tarantelle by wieniawski but my heart's still set on w's fausty fantasy. I went to germany and acquired music from a music shop in frankfurt. I couldn't find it in US..
Once popular pieces that have gone out of style? There are quite a few! Ernst's "Otello" Fantasy, Violin Concerto and "Hungarian Air" were pretty popular concert pieces back in the late 19th to early 20th century. Goddard's violin concerto was also relatively popular in its day, as well as Joachim's "Hungarian" concerto (Joachim wrote 3 violin concerti. I heard two of them, but I have yet to hear the no.1).
I recently purchased a "complete" set of Spohr concerti played by the German violinist Ulf Hoelscher. He is a bit of "German Rosand." He has recorded complete Saint-Saens concerti as well as Schumann concerto and obscure French violin sonatas.
Several other pieces have come to my mind. Swensen's "Romance", Goldmark concerto and suites were pretty popular back in the late 19th century as well. Violinists of Kreisler-Thibaud calibre were known to play those pieces. Goldmark concerto seems to make a "come back" these days.
Fritz: if you're interested in Sarasate's Faust Fantasy, there's a 1911 Carl Fischer edition (Charles Castleman used it for his recording) and a 1981 Schirmer Great Performer's Edition by Ricci (with 5 other not-so-famous Sarasate pieces) that I know of. As for recordings, there's Shaham's new CD, a Castleman recording, a Ricci (Sarasate-A Hommage by Ruggiero Ricci), and a Rachel Barton ("Instrument of the Devil").
