During my recently active stint on BGG, I've seen quite a few people playing by forum. Would anybody be willing to test out playing DD through forum? As I said in another thread, my playthroughs have been solo with me playing as multiple players. I think PBF would also help to see the progression of the game and would allow us to analyze gameplay as we are playing and fragment the problems by time of game. Let me know if anyone would be up for it.

I'd love to try, but how do you imagine this? If it is just some text with pics, we might as well do it here on the group.

I was thinking to play here in the group, I just used PBF as a name. And it would be much like a chess by email match in which players would leave dice that other players have out of the bag. If I drew a normal armor and the fire sword, you would remove them from your treasure.

Turns would go as follows:
Player 1 draws monster
If he thinks he can win, he goes ahead and rolls it all out and states the win or lose (numbers and flavor text are always nice)
Player 2 would either contest the win with a one use die or go ahead and draw the second monster and do the same as above
If player two states the continuation of the game by allowing you to win, you may then draw your treasure. treasure drawn is stated in the thread

Player 3 draws a level 3 golem and doesn't think he can win, he may then ask for help and, after choosing, all dice are stated by thread. I don't expect the games to be short, but it would certainly be interesting. Considering everything is communicated via thread, the dice wouldn't have to sit out gathering dust while we're waiting (you can still play a game in the meantime). I will probably, at the bottom of each of my posts, state what dice are in front of me so that, in the event that I want to play with someone else, I can re-set up what we had accomplished thus far.

I am currently using the entire base PnP set and the dice in the 11 dice expansions EXCEPT for the classes. If they are requested to be put in, we can do so. Additionally, if there are any other dice (duel die, quake die, one use dice) that want to be put in, I can easily prepare them before match.

Sounds interesting... would be good if the group of players belong to nearly one timezone (europe, america, etc.) ;-)

Obviously, being in the same timezone would be advantageous as you could often rattle off multiple turns in a very short period of time, but that doesn't make it necessary. I am sure that if we get 3-4 very active people. we can go through roughly 3 turns a day. We'll put a limit on time between turns to allow people to play one use dice (curse etc) so that people are able to play them without being left behind, but also we won't be waiting for ages for everyone to say "no, I don't want to play any".

Combat will be laid out as follows:
-One person rolls monster, fights monster and posts results on thread ("Level 2 Slime was faught. Slime pulled out all the stops with a 6 and a 2, but could not handle the might of a 2 and 3 for the hero dice, and a 3 spear and 2 sword. Upon acceptance from the group, I will gain one experience, snack on the unnecessary slimy body, and pick up two potions")
-A wait period of 5 hours will ensue, unless all members of the game post roaring congratulations, allowing the victory to be had.
-The person will draw the two potions and state what was drawn.
-The next fighter may step up to the battlefield and prepare to fight, thus returning to the first step.
-The next fighter does not have to wait for the previous fighter to state his spoils.

I propose that one use dice do not have to be removed from all bags if drawn, however treasures/artifacts/monsters do. This will ensure that when a player draws the fire shield, other players do not have that privilege.

Help will certainly be more time consuming than solo faught battles, but this fun experiment should not be hastily finished, so asking for help is encouraged. It will ensue as follows

-"Help! Help! A level 3 witch ambushed me! I don't think I can take it down by myself! I promise a 50/50 shot at the treasure if anyone can take it down for me! Player 3, you have a few strength potions that might come in handy should she pull out some epic level spells, would you mind working with me to take down this horrendous beast?"
-A 3 hour waiting period will occur in the event that a player requests help from a specific player, unless otherwise specified. If the time ends without a response, other players may asked to be considered for the job.
-In this, player 3 jumped in to the rescue just in time. "I will gladly help you for a shot at that juicy treasure. Using my armor (2 Shield), Sword (3), and Drain Whip (Drain), combined with my 2 and 2 hero dice, I plunge into battle to help out."
-The active player then rolls out his/her own dice and the monsters dice and does with the abilities that player 3 rolled as he/she wishes. Upon winning, the spoils are then determined and the waiting period then ensues for people to help the monster out. The turn then changes.

If this all seems exceedingly complicated for a PBF, let me know. It might be time consuming, but I'm up for it if anyone else wants to work it out.

So far, me and casu are 100% in. Seb might be showing interest?

We'll aim to start on Sunday? Please let me know if you are 100% in and if you have any dice that you'd like to throw into the starting bags. I would like to say classes would be nice, but I don't think we should risk such a big playtest item in this experimental game. If you don't have any problem with starting as is, post your starting dice (hero level die, experience tracker and two treasures) here sometime on Sunday.

Well, casu. It looks like it will be just you and I. You are welcome to go ahead and pick your first two treasure die. If you would like, you may draw the first monster as well. I will try to respond quickly in order to keep the game moving as fast as possible. I believe you said you were in Eurpope. I am in the UK so that should work out in our favor.

Others are free to heckle whenever they please. A bit of banter always makes a game more fun.

All right, here it is:

I collected a sword and a shield.

I rolled a Witch (level 3)

Witch rolled 3,3,4

I rolled

  • 2 on the SWORD die ( no sword)
  • 2 on the SHIELD die (2+SHIELD)
  • 1 on the HERO die

I rerolled the 4 of the witch

FINAL RESULT:

  • Witch 4+3+4 (rerolled 3) = 10

  • Me: 2+2+1= 5
I lost a wound and had to flee in dishonour.

END TURN

Ooch. She showed you a good time. Rough starting fight though. I think I would have had to flee.

Right-O: My draw was a standard standard bow and a standard whip (I don't need no stinkin' armor anyways)

Armed with my trusty bow, I hunted down a Lvl 3 Wolf and a Lvl 2 Golem. As quick as I was, I couldn't quite get the right shot lined up. If someone could help me corner the level 2 Golem, I'd give them an equal shot at the treasure (I'll take high 3).

Got my dice: 2 armor dice (never can be to strong armored).

@griffin: would give you a hand... what about trading one armor die against your whip?

That sounds like a good plan.

With that, I have a bow, armor and level die. Shall we take this down together? I'll roll out my dice and the monster dice and you roll out yours. If we win, go ahead and roll out the treasure. I'll take upper 3.

With my newly equipped armor, I roll a 2 for the bow, 2 for the level and a 1 for the armor (no shield).
The monster shows no yield with a 3 and a 4.

In the event that the monster chooses to reroll my level die, feel free to do so for me. Sorry I couldn't be of much more help, it seems I'm still a fairly rookie archer. Finish him off, Seb

So with my new whip (thanks griffin) and my famous armor I am going to support griffin:

2 on the level die;
0 with a shield on the armor die;
1 on the whip die;
total 3 with griffins 5 we got 8 against the golems 7

so the golem causes reroll for one level die = reroll shows a 2, total result stays as shown. Both players get an XP.

The mighty heroes crushed the golem with well aimed arrows and accurate lash of the whip.

Treasure Roll off: 1-3 Seb; 4-6 griffin --> it´s a 3 Seb got the treasure... I got no key or hammer, so I have to take a potion.

Potion: Healing Potion

Seb´s Turn:
Equipment: Whip; Armor, Level Die (1/1)
Potions: Healing Potion
XP: 1

An icky lvl 2 Spider appears from a dark cave... because of my last fight I don´t trust in my power (or in the power of my weapons). Someone up to help me for an equal shot at the potion (I'll take high 3).

Before you go asking for help, I would like to remind you that a Golem is a regular treasure. You might be able to pull out an additional 1 handed weapon to fight off that spider. Go ahead and put the potion back and draw a treasure. That might make the fight a little easier. Ok, I will try to beat the spider with casu.

Two mighty heroes fight against the nasty spider: Die 1:Potion 6; Die 2: 1 ; Total spider: 7

Seb:
Die 1(Whip):2 with a Whip (which kills the Spider die 2: 1)
Die 2(Armor): 2
Die 3(Lvl): 2

It´s already equal! Come on casu slash her!

With no fear I face the spider and give full power in the lash of my whip (amazing result!).

Haha, critical miss. Get the bad rolls out of your system now; good thinking.

I guess that makes it my turn. Arrow drawn, I purge through the forest yearning for another kill. I stumble past a slime and a skeleton chatting by a fire. Quickly, I begin to release a flurry of arrows onto the slime (rolls slime)

While sneaking closer I accidentally kick something and it makes a clink. It appears some dopey traveler dropped a potion here. I might not need to fight this slime after all.

Looting the unguarded potion bag, I pull out a strength potion. That slime will just have to wait another day.

Right. I guess that it's my turn to hunt down some beasts. My feeble two experience will hopefully get lucky and run into a foe that I can single handedly take down.

Once again armed with my bow, I came across a ghost shortly followed by a goblin. Worried that my arrows would pass right through the ghost, I decided to approach the goblin, which turned out to be level 2

Without hesitation, I attacked (I hope his kids weren't watching). I pulled out all the stops with a 3 on the bow, a 3 on the level die and a 1+shield on the armor.
The goblin retaliated quickly with a 5 and a 2. I forced him to reroll that five (telling him that it was very rude to roll a five on such a weak hero), and he turned it into a 3. Alas, the goblin was on his last legs. He used his ability to reroll the two and it as well turned into a bit stronger 3. It wasn't enough. I reigned victorious.

Me: 3+3+1 = 7
Goblin: 3 + 3 = 6

Horns sang from the skies celebrating my victory, giving me the courage to level up.  Additionally, by looting his lovely two bedroom apartment, I came across a spear+1 (the one with the face with the eye on it). This should come in handy.

back to me, I guess.

Firmly fitted with my new spear and my new level die, I go on the hunt. Sadly, since I don't have the range of a bow, I only came across one monster... an bat. While weak, it still remained a perfect opportunity to poke it full of holes.

Little did I know, this bat was no rookie, it was a friggity level 3... Before we dive head first, I use my reach to get a good estimate of how I'll fare. (I know it makes no real difference as a good roll will just be gusted away...)

Griffin: 0, 4, 2, 3 + spear = 9

I think that's a fair roll, so I'm effing going for it. Balls to the wall, right? Besides, I have a strength potion if I need it.

The bat throws down some sick moves and comes out with an 8! (4+2+2) Furious, he throws a temper tantrum, knocking my happy roll all over the place. But I get up, gather my goods and charge back in.

Griffin: 2 + Shield, 2 + spear, 1 and 2 (I guess that gust of wind really knocked me about)
(Zu)bat: 6 + 3 + 4

Woof. I'm getting creamed. I shield bash the crap out of him, knocking him off his power blow, rerolling his 6 into a 2. But I'm still losing by 2. My only hope is to grab my trusty strength potion and hope for the best. Like popeye with a can of spinach, I drain the potion into my ale laiden belly and swing for an extra two damage.

With the bat whizzing around tiredly and me barely able to carry my own equipment, we both come out with a total of 9 (Me: 2+Shield, 2+spear, 2, 1, 2(str ptn) vs. Bat: 2, 3, 4).
I take a hit to the face, knocking away my fresh new level die, but the bat dies slowly at my feet due to extreme blood loss. I call it a victory.

Behind him, I see a coarse, rocklike object, but it is unnaturally round. I investigate it and find that it's no rock at all. It's a friggen bomb! This could come in handy (maniacal laugh).

At the end of the turn, I am as follows:

Griffin: 4 exp, 1 fame (Lvl 3 Bat), Spear+1, Armor, Bow (unequipped), Bomb, 2 Level dice (1 missing from wound)

Congratulations, great fight, the legend will spread and songs will be sung on you for hundreds of years :)

So after my little sleep something makes me wake up, I open my eyes looking in the ugly face of a goblin! Before he can grab my stuff I´m onto my feet and the fight starts!

Lvl 1 Gob: 4 + Sword

Seb: 2 (Lvl die), 2 (armor die), 0 + Whip (whip die) --> negates his single combat die, so a reroll doens´t make sense for him

Result: So my whip just entangles the goblin and he fell helpless to my feets... won without great battle ;-) And wow he got a bow(couldn´t he had a sword or another single handed weapon?!)... think I will take the bow with me, just to make sure he doens´t bother other sleeping people.

At the end of the turn, I am as follows:
Seb: 3 XP, 0 fame, Whip, Armor, Hammer (unequipped), bow (unequipped), 2 from 2 Lvl dice

Suddenly I smell something burning and I quickly locate the trace of  Fire elemental that traveled here not so long ago. I brace myself and start following the path.

After a while I find something on the burned ground. I examine it and find that is a CHEST!

I open it and find .... Another Shield.... :-/

Armed with my whip and armor (and my 2 lvl dice) I leave the wood thinking about a smell in my nose... had smelled that before and not long ago. Next to one of the last trees there´s the same goblin sitting (now without a bow) . He looks angry when I got insight... Sreaming he attacks my... but same procedure as last time, my whip entangles his feet and he ends lying in front of me:
1 + 1 on lvl dice, 0 + Shield, 0+Whip

Goblin take a two on his combat die witch is drawn by the whip...

So I have look what he has into his bags now: wow, another shield... (nothing other useful in there?!)

SLIME Lv: 6+6

Wow... you poor thing. I hear them slime can be really tough...

Fully resting and rearing for a good fight, I hear some heavy breathing around the corner. Might this be the dragon that I yearn for? Turning the corner quickly, I rear up for attack to see it's not a dragon at all, but instead a big brown ugly bull who flips *&%$ at the sight of my red bomb die. He attacks with a roll of a 2, 5 and 4 and I decide that I can't let this beast live so near a populated city. Thus, I attack!

Lvl 3 Bull: 2, 5, 4
Lvl 2 Griffin: 3 + Spear, 1 + Shield, 1, 4

Reroll Monster's 5 into a 3, Monster steals my 1.

Lvl 3 Bull = 10
Lvl 2 Griffin = 8

I really should have realized that even a great roll wouldn't have beat that, but I am pleased with my attempt. Luckily I have the red die that the bull so eagerly wants to kill. Getting my but kicked, I ram the bomb into the bull's throat and smack it in the face. The explosion hits the bull for 3 damage and he falls to the ground. Winded, I gain two experience and an axe that had been accidentally dropped in a pile of poo and left behind. Wiping off the remnant stains on the bull's hide, I equip it to my free hand. I think this has been a very good turn indeed.

Griffin: 6 exp (lvl 3), 1 fame (lvl 3 bat), Axe, Spear+1, Armor, Bow (unequipped)

Oehm... may be you should equip your glasses, so you will see that your famous fight was against an demon, not a bull ;-)

But nice story :)

Turn Seb:
I´ve heard some screaming and when I look for it I found casu lying on the ground, resting... and the same way some thing slimy fell down on me, a lvl 2 slime!

So I call at casu: Come on, together we can make it (For an equal shot on the potion? Will take 4-6).

Right then, while the witch was cackling about her clever little trick involving turning you into a frog, I hunted her down in order to end her once and for all. This level 3 witch had it coming. Armed with my axe in one hand and my super spear in another, the With shows her gusto.

Witch: 2 + 4 + 6 = 12 (with a spell lying in wait)

Considering the fact that I can do a max of 20, I give it a shot.

Griffin: 4 + 1 + 3 + 1 (w/ Shield) + 2 (w/o axe) + 3 (w/ spear and scout) = 14

I can choose to run if I wish given my scouting ability on my spear, but I am not done here. I have the witch on her toes (or broomstick?) and she doesn't have much. I'll start by rerolling her 6 (goodbye dear potion). A steroid enrage shield bash knocks her down to a 3 (giving her a total of 9). Knowing that a trusty fireball can hardly save her ass, the witch begins an incantation and a fierce wind picks up. I rear up for the finishing blow and begin to bring it down to split her head in two, but I get blown away right before the axe makes contact. She has time to recover and we must begin the dance again.

Round 2
Witch: 1 + 6 + 6 = 13
I presume it's too late to run away, so I fight anyways.
Griffin: 1 + 2 + 4 + 2 (w/shield) + 2 (w/spear) + 3 (w/o axe) = 14

It is tempting to reroll her six, but seeing as I am winning anyways, I will accept the two potions and the delicious victory!

Using my little red key, I open the door to her cauldron room only to find that she was using a sword to flame the fire under her cauldron and some of her magic spilled off into the blade. I now have a fire enchanted sword (which I aptly equip). Additionally, in the cauldron room, I find a scroll of the witches as well as a bomb (it appears she has been dabbling in crating; quite successfully, I might add). I pocket them and move out.

Griffin: Level 3 (6 exp), fire sword (equipped), Axe (equipped), spear + 1 (unequipped), bow (unequipped), Armor (equipped), 2 fame (lvl 3 bat and lvl 3 witch), bomb, scroll

Looking forward to sitting on my comfy throne, dawning my shining crown, I go on the hunt. A hear a loud warcry from the other side of the forest and chase it down. It's a level 3 wolf and it's foaming at the mouth. Using my axe in one hand and my fire sword in the other we engage in the dance of death.

Wolf: 6 + 6 + 4 = 16

Crap. This is gonna hurt.

Griffin: 1 + 1 + 3 + 2 (w/ sword) + 0 (w/o shield) + 2 (w/ axe) = 9

Sorry to barge in your game, it's been very fun to watch so far, but I just had a rules question. Can't you trade five regular treasures for an artifact? If so, why can't Seb just go ahead and trade his in? I apologize for my beginner's ignorance but my friend's and I encountered this situation the other night and I wanted some clarification. Anywho, I'd be interested in participating in the next game but in the mean time carry on!

I could trade five of my treasures for an artifact, but there some points why I don´t trade now:
1. At the moment I can choose to fight with whip and sword or my atifact hammer ( if I would trade i cant use it with my second artifact because the hammer is two handed... so I wait until I can keep an one handed treasure weapon...)
2. I can trade my treasures at any time... ;-)

Knowing the truth of Seb's plan for the throne, I thrust through the woods in the dark of night despite the blood dripping down my leg. I come across a dastardly ghoul and I know that this might be my chance. Is he strong enough to win over the hearts of the people? After a spot of tea, the ghost politely informs me that he is Casper, the lvl 2 Ghost. Angry at his lack of skill, I scream bloody murder at him and he turns. [insert mortal kombat fight sound effect]

Griffin: 2 + 2 + 3 (w/ double sword) + 2 (2/ axe) + 0

Before casper even thinks about striking I slice right through his ghostly self, rendering his soul in two. He is no more. His human body lie behind him. Underneath his clawed up body, you learn by the bow and quiver that he was an archer. Despite the fact that I have no use for another bow, I take it with me... Upon looting the guarded body, the now shattered soul tears through my body leaving me unable to breath. Ow.

Spider 7 vs. Seb 7 - tie! If griffon don´t support the spider ;-) I get a wound, a potion and a nice spider trophy... (the wound will be healed by one of my healing potions)

Sorry grif, but as I make a little break at a tavern, I hear a roar from outside and as I come out there´s a"little" (just as big as a small house) dragon (level 3) which snacks away some cows. With two Whips (artifact and normal one) I´m going to kill him or die at triing it.

Dragon:
2+3+3+ fizzle(Fireball)= 8 -->3 after all combat effects (see below)

Seb:
0(Armor);+ 2+1+1(lvl dice);+ 1+tangle (normal whip);+ 0+drain(artifact whip) = 5 +(kicking out a 2 from the dragon) 3 (Drain)=8
After my incredible strike the dragon roars again, summon his magic and a magic wind sets the time back to the moment I came out of the tavern:

Dragon:
6+5+4+ 2(Fireball) = 17!!! --> 2 after all combat effects (see below!)

Seb:
1+ shield (Armor); +1+1+2 (lvl dice); 0+tangle (normal whip); 0+tangle+drain (artifact whip)=  5 +(kicking away the 4+5) 6 (Drain)=11

So after a mighty hit of my magic whip the dragon fells down totally entangled. I take him with me so he gives me fame! In the tavern I change 5 of my treasures for the artifact which hangs on a wall there, waiting for me! Because of all these fame and might, the other guests take me on their shoulders, calling: Hail to the king; Hail to King Seb!

Thanks to all my subjects!

Okay, some thoughts then.

I have mixed feelings in fact. While I think the game per se is fun and fast paced, I feel that at low levels it is very difficult and a bit of unluck can pin you down for good

On medium and High it feels almost too easy and unless you roll a high level a two or three level do not represent a problem at all.

The bomb is a good combo breaker, but we need a bit more of interaction between players. We could benefit of ides like backstabbing or such.

Your thoughts?

I introduced the backstab to my group and now we never play without it.
It´s a proper pain to lose a fame by it, but what goes around, comes around. I´ve ultimately lost the game aswell because I got too eager acting the noble Paladin, spent dice backstabbing and failing my own combats. It´s a double edged sword, and I like it.

It also takes a few games to realize the balance between helping others and playing solo/ deny your service.
Saving reds for your own shot at an artifact is also crucial. The DrainWhip or Spear of Gust can really tip your scales! (or any other for that sake)

I think... that´s correct. Except we omitted the "last active die" rule. People will NOT backstab you unless it feels important. We´ve even had someone backstab, then contribute to kill the monster with boosters for a shot at the artifact. Not often but a laughable twist.

For the rules:

You may backstab a hero, rolling one of your active green hero dice. This is added to the black monster dice and counts towards its total. After the combat you must suffer this die as a wound, and refresh it just like you would normally; spending your turn to roll a monster level die and refreshing 1-3 hero dice. Any and all players may backstab with a single hero die per combat.
