As some point, I'd like to offer a workshop on free code operating
systems. Most people involved with DSpace are already familiar with
Linux as used with GNU and Android systems, but how many people have
had a play with Haiku, Syllable, OpenIndiana (formerly OpenSolaris) or
GNU/HURD? I will bring .iso files of these along.

I can demonstrate simple graphical methods for making a LiveUSB
system, so you can boot into the GNU/Linux distro of your choice, or
Haiku, using only a USB memory stick (please bring your own stick, 2GB
or larger). If I have time, I will see if I can figure out how to boot
Syllable, OpenIndiana and GNU/HURB off USB too.

can you show how a headless server can run multiple virtual images booted from USBsticks? Given that Andrew's multicore system is overpowered for most tasks, perhaps this is a cheap option to run multiple systems securely ... now all we need is a multi-blade GPU to blend all the desktops together.

I have to admit I'm not quite sure what you mean, but we certainly
discuss it in more detail at DSpace, and see if any of the knowledge
I'm lugging around in my meatbrain can contribute to your goal.
