Wednesday 16 July, 7.30PM, University of Otago’s Castle 1 Lecture Theatre** Aging outlaws go out in a blaze of glory in Peckinpah’s elegiac film about the last days of the Wild West. Still the brutal benchmark for action cinema, influencing countless imitators.

| “From the opening sequence, in which a circle of laughing children poke at a scorpion writhing in a sea of ants, to the infamous blood-spurting finale, Peckinpah completely rewrites John Ford’s Western mythology... The flight into Mexico, where they virtually embrace their death at the hands of double-crossing general Fernandez and his rabble army, is a nihilistic acknowledgment of the men’s anachronistic status” (Nigel Floyd, Time Out) FURTHER REVIEW "The film’s nihilist streak... invests it with a spitting, yowling nastiness both formative and alien to the current cinema landscape of blandly gritty antiheroes. Peckinpah’s senseless bloodshed foregrounded its own senselessness to comment on a time losing touch with its humanity; that we now think of this period as the “good old days” indicates just how far we’ve all fallen" (Charles Bramesco, The Guardian).
