| "You might think seeing is believing, but tell that to Amenábar, writer/director of this dazzling thriller, which toys with our perceptions to exquisitely torturous effect. Initially, it appears that playboy César (Eduardo Noriega) has it all: money, looks, girls. One night at a party, however, eager to escape jealous Nuria (Najwa Nimri), he strikes up a conversation with Sofía (Penelope Cruz), and soon realises he’s in love... Amenábar adds layers of information overload, altering the picture from noir-ish poser to latter-day Beauty and the Beast, and eventually to head spinning sci-fi mode” (Trevor Johnston, Time Out).

"Open Your Eyes touches on and passes through so many genres that it transcends categorization. At one moment, it's a melodrama. At another, it's a romance. Then film noir. Then a cautionary tale. Then a morality play. Then science fiction. Perhaps the most amazing thing is how ably and seamlessly Amenábar blends so many diverse elements together. He uses conventional narrative techniques – flashbacks, dream sequences, and scenes in the "present" – but the way in which he pieces them together gives us the sense that we, along with the protagonist, are unraveling a serpentine scheme" (James Berardinelli, ReelViews).

- you can also join at the OUSA office reception at the University of Otago (cash only).
Alternatively, you can purchase a Three-Film sampler ($25), which can be also be shared to bring two friends to one screening. The sampler does not expire and can be used over multiple years.
