Hello, all Duncan-group-f friends! Now that it's almost the new year, I can focus back on genealogy again.

Below is a message from the administrator of the Z253 project. As you can see below, it's likely that we fall in that group. After some correspondence, I have submitted single SNP tests on my father's sample for Z253 and Z2186. (I could have just done Z2186, since a positive test there implies a positive Z253 as well, but I got confused. The place where you request Z2186 is fairly well hidden.) I'm forwarding this to the group just as background information. When I get the results back, I'll let you all know.

Since BIG-Y uses a lot of the sample DNA and because I can't get an additional sample from my father, I've decided not to do that test. I'm glad other folks are doing that and I will be glad to support that effort (another email shortly when that is done).

In other news, I've become the web administrator for the Duncan Surname Association website (http://www.duncanroots.com/xxx/). Right now, I'm working on resolving a problem with the copy of Mary Ann Dobson's files that are available there. I haven't forgotten my promise to put together a website for this group! I should be able to get to that before much longer.

Subject: genetic genealogy results

Hi Max

My name is Greg Hockings. I am contacting you regarding your genetic results in the Duncan DNA Project. I see that you are one of a large grouping of Duncans (Group F on the website) who all appear to be related. Most are predicted to have the haplogroup R-M269, and two have tested positive for L21, which is in haplogroup R below M269.

I am one of the volunteer administrators of the Z253 Project. The Z253 mutation defines a large clade of L21. We have recently identified multiple branches and subclades under Z253, which are revealing links between paternal lineages with different surnames.

You have a Genetic Distance of 5 at 67 markers to a member of the Z253 Project with the surname Bridgnell (ancestral name Brignall). You also share 7 of his 9 off-modal STRs. Bridgnell is positive for Z253 and several of its downstream SNPs, including Z2534, Z2185 and Z2186.

Therefore it is likely that you are positive for these same SNPs. So I would suggest that you (or one of the other Duncans in your group) test for Z2186, which is currently the terminal (youngest) SNP of Bridgnell’s branch so far identified. If you are negative, then you should test for Z253, but I expect that you will be Z2186+, in which case we will know that you must also be Z253+.

Bridgnell’s results can be viewed on the Z253 Project website. I would also like to invite you to join the Z253 Project. The web address is: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/R-Z253/default.aspx

Please let me know if you would like any further information on this subject.

Greg Hockings
