Duncan Group F,

This weekend I received an email from FTDNA for a new yDNA match with Gregory Scott Duncan.  He is one of my closest matches with a genetic distance of 2 over 67 markers.  I’ve traded a few emails with him over the past couple days, and he said that his oldest ancestor was John H. Duncan who was born in 1837 in Floyd Co, IN.

After some searching online, it looks like his line continues back a few more generations into Virginia:

John H. Duncan (1837 Floyd Co, IN)

James Triplett Duncan (1804 KY)

Charles Duncan (1774 VA)

Coleman Duncan (Virginia)

Henry Duncan (1710 Virginia)

I found that lineage online, and then I checked Mary Ann Dobson’s files.  Sure enough, her Westmoreland Co, VA, files documented the ancestry of James Triplett Duncan.  Notes in one of the files traces the line back farther to a 1678 immigrant Henry Duncan, and then to William Duncan, the Scottish martyr.  But another note in the same file says that this line actually goes back to Peter Duncan.  I’m not sure which – if either – is correct.  Maybe someone else is more familiar with these early Duncans.

As one of my closest yDNA cousins, I’m interested to learn more about Greg’s Duncan line.  I go back to John Duncan (born 1741) who enlisted in the Rev. War in Fauquier Co, VA, in 1778.  I’m not sure if he was born there or if he moved there as a young man.  After the war, he lived in Montgomery/Floyd Co, VA.

Is anyone else in the group related to this line?  Does Greg show up as a yDNA match with anyone else in our group?  Tim, do you have any thoughts as to how he might fit into our Duncan tree?

Coleman>Henry>Charles is definitely Peter Duncan Family, per email exchange with Mary Ann a year or so ago.

This is our Y-dna cousin Ginny Duncan's line (Green Cameron Duncan Jr.) who Mary Ann claimed had the best documented line of all our Y-dna cousins.  Also, she sent me a congratulation email on my line connecting to the Peter Duncan family.... Which made me feel like framing (from her).

Also, Some elements of this Henry Duncan (father of Coleman) family in Bute Co., NC with my Duncan's too. Also, If my memory serves me correctly, one of the Charles Duncans in this line made "a swing through NC".

Attaching our "working chart" showing Ginny's line, back to Peter The Elder, and how we  (Charles & I) think our line  connect (still with some question marks/best guesses on your line).

Also, if memory serves me correctly (and strictly off the top of my head)  Ginny's line migrated something like, Westmoreland to Loudoun County, Va, to KY (Location of James Triplett Duncan), then her family (through Green Duncan) went on to Texas.

Note to Charles: Correct me if am wrong here ... been awhile since I've research the Charles Duncan, son of Peter The Elder Family. Also, my recollection is one of the Charles Duncans, connecting to Coleman, made a swing through NC.

An Outline of the Early Duncans

of Westmoreland, Richmond, and Loudoun Counties, Va.,

and Nelson Co., Ky.

by Robert P. Moore, 176 Valley Rd., Lexington, Ky. 40503-2023

Dr. Holtzclaw thinks Ruth, the wife of Coleman Read, b. ca. 1687, d. 1748, Westmoreland Co. (Will in Book 11), could have been the daughter of Joseph Hudson and Ruth ______ of Westmoreland Co., Va. This is contrary to the popularly held belief that she was a Bragg. Andrew Read died in Westmoreland Co. in 1697, leaving a will that has been mutilated and is difficult to read. He left an eldest son Joseph who m. (1) Henrietta Garland, widow of James Hardwick and (2) Barbara Walker, dau. of George Walker and Frances(?) Hardwick. Another daughter, Elizabeth, married Thomas Brown, son of Thomas Brown and Elizabeth Thornton. They had a son Coleman Brown, who appears in Loudoun Co. records. As was mentioned above, another daughter of Coleman Read's (possibly Frances, also the name of her only daughter, or Rebecca) married Henry Duncan, the father of the Duncans of Nelson Co., Ky. Coleman Read's daughter Lettice married Thomas Hutt, son of Gerrard Hutt and Ann Hull. Mary and Susannah Read died unmarried, and their brother Richard, probably born ca. 1720-25 had a wife Elizabeth. Coleman and Ruth's daughter Ann Read married Thomas Asbury, and they were ancestors of the Asburys of central Kentucky.

Coleman Read was the son of Andrew Read, b. ca. 1635, d. 1697, Westmoreland Co., and his second wife Elizabeth, who was probably the dau. of Richard Coleman. Andrew Read's 1697 will shows sons Coleman and Andrew Jr. Andrew also left a daughter Temperance, who married Thomas White. In addition, there were daughters Elizabeth and Susannah, both of whom appear briefly in the records of Westmoreland Co. Andrew Read was very probably the son of George Read Jr., b. ca. 1610, d. April 1663, Faccombe, Hampshire, England. George Jr. and wife Margery's children's christenings are recorded in the Faccombe church, and some information on the family is in his father George Sr.'s will. This George was born about 1570 and married Elizabeth Bryde in Faccombe parish on 9 Nov. 1590. George Sr. had a son John and also George Jr., the executor of his will. George Sr was the son of Andrew Reade (b. ca. 1540-45, d. July 1623, Faccombe) and Alice Cook, his first wife.

Peter Duncan, the great grandfather of Henry and Coleman of Nelson Co., Ky., is thought to have been born ca. 1633. Westmoreland Co., Va., records indicate that he left these children: Peter; Henry, d. before May 1712, Cople Parish, Westmoreland Co., m. Dorothy (Blancheflower?); John, d. before 22 Feb. 1726, Cople Parish, Westmoreland Co., m. Elizabeth Money; Charles, d. ca. 1712, Westmoreland Co., m. Frances _____; a dau. of m. George Harris; and a dau. who m. Dennis Cornhill. Henry Duncan and Dorothy had a son Blanchflower Duncan.

The Holtzclaw article is recommended, since it goes into much greater detail on these families. There is documentation on the early Read(e) generations in England.

Various branches of the Duncan family have provided outlines of the children of Henry Duncan and Rebecca Read/Reid. Among these are the notes of Sandford Duncan at the Filson Club in Louisville, Ky.; the unpublished memoirs of James C. Duncan in the Barker Texas History Center at the University of Texas, written about 1902; the unpublished 1852 and 1871 memoirs of Henry Sandford Duncan, son of Charles Duncan and Jane Music, with additions by J. Fale Duncan of the line of Coleman Duncan and Elizabeth Young; the unpublished Kentucky Families (ca. 1954) by Mrs. J. Weldon (Mary Elizabeth Green) Baird in the Kentucky Historical Society library; and the more recent research of Mrs. Lillian Parrish Overstreet of Louisville, Ky., a Green descendant. Some of these contain many more contemporary descendants than those given here. Henry and Rebecca Duncan had the following, as named in his will:

A. Fannie Duncan, b. 8 May 1744, d. 25 July 1827, bur. Old Bloomfield cem., Bloomfield, Ky., m. ca. 1760, Manlove Tarrant, from whom she was separated. They had Fanny and Henry, a Revolutionary soldier who lived in Tennessee. Both children were born inMassachusetts.

B. Henry Duncan m. Mildred Boyle (often also spelled Boyll). See below.

C. Charles Duncan m. Susan Mason. He is said to have gone to sea with his brother-in-law, Manlove Tarrant and later settled in Loudoun Co., Va., where was engaged in the manufacture of pottery. Sons Benjamin and Mason are said to have settled in Missouri. Susan was probably of the family of Benjamin Mason of Loudoun Co., Va.

D. George Duncan m. Elizabeth Lyne. He also went to sea with Tarrant and later moved from Massachusetts to Alexandria, Va. They were said to be the parents of Rebecca, who m. her cousin Charles, son of Coleman. He is thought to have had a son Robert. Fairfax Co. Will Book E, pp. 3-5, contains the will of George Duncan of Alexandria, written 20 Aug. 1782 and prob. Apr. 1784. He mentions sons George and Robert and dau. Rebecca and says he holds land by warrant in Kentucky. His executors William Hartshorne, Peter Wise, and brother Charles Duncan. His witnesses were Adam Lynn, John Short, and Coleman Duncan. His son George got his house in Alexandria on Royal Street next to Adam Lynn and Richard Clark.

E. Coleman Duncan m. Mary Lyne (said to be the dau. of Thomas Lyne and Mary, dau. Robert Sanford). See below.

Here follow the children of Henry Duncan and Mildred Boyle and Coleman Duncan and Mary Lyne:

They are ancestors of Marion Fulton Dugan of Bloomfield, Ky. They had children Thomas, William, possibly Mary. There is also a Maria with them in the 1870 census of Nelson Co., but she is listed (after William, b. ca. 1854) as being born in 1840, so she is not their daughter unless there is a mistake in the transcription of this census. Also living with them in 1870 are the following Coopers: Zachariah, b. ca. 1857; Martha, b. ca. 1858; and John, b. ca. 1860. Perhaps these are the children of Maranda's brother Zachariah

Many of the dates of birth and death of his children are from the Bible of Daisy Duncan of Bloomfield, dau. of Coleman Duncan and Sarah Russell. All but Nancy Cameron Wilson are bur. in Duncan cem. on Green Duncan farm, about two miles from Bloomfield, Ky., owned in 1992 by Joseph Duncan Whittington, a descendant. Since all records (except that of Mrs. J. Weldon Baird) show that Green Duncan died in 1869, it is puzzling to see him listed at age 77 (b. ca. 1793) in the 1870 census (mid-August) just after his Hinkle descendants and with his son Joseph and possible daughter Mary. It is possible that this is actually his grandson Green Duncan Hinkle, b. 22 June 1870 and that the transcribers (two different people's versions) of this census misread the age, which would have been given in some number of months. Green Duncan's will was most definitely proved in 1869 six days after his death.

He built a large brick house on his farm (on Kentucky Rte. 55, about three miles from Bloomfield), where he and some of the family were buried. The bricks were made on the farm and the house completed and occupied during the Civil War. It is said that he freed 72 slaves after the war.
