Hello everyone,

First I apologize for being so late in saying how much I enjoyed our Raleigh meeting.  It was good to meet so many Duncans:)

Family Tree DNA has just announced there holiday sale which runs until Dec. 31st. Everyone should have received an email notice.

As part of the sale they are giving our "mystery rewards" for additional discounts.

I talked about getting several men to do the Big-Y test for group 'F' as this will help us in our matching.  At least one Big-Y from the two subgroups of group 'F'.  This test is an advance SNP test looking for new SNPs to help us in our matching.

As I mention we can receive donations at the project general fund site for donations toward these test also.

The sale price has reduced the price by $50 and I currently have an additional $100 coupon to add to it.

This makes the net price $425…$150 off!

These mystery coupons codes are good for a week and need to be used ASAP before they are replaced with a new one.

Let me know if someone want to order ASAP and I will send the code.

I will keep an eye open for another Big-Y $50 or $100 coupon.

Also, everyone gets a new mystery reward every week so keep checking your myFTDNA page.  You can gift any of your codes to other people.

Lets list our codes on this group site so other people needing to upgrade their 37marker test etc. can use them.  The coupons come in all shapes and sizes.

This is a good time to get those need upgrades done and the need Big-Y's done.

I am here for any questions that you may have.

Sincerely,

Tim Duncan

Howdy Cousins,

I took advantage of the sale and ordered the upgrade to Y-111 and Family Finder.

Happy holidays from snowy Virginia,

Hello, all!

I'll probably be ordering the upgrade to Y111 and the Big-Y for my father's sample. I already have Family Finder, which brings up a question. My father's FF shows that his ancestry is 59% Scandinavian and 4% British Isles (and a lot of other small percentages). Historically, we know that there was a lot of Scandinavian settlement in Scotland, so that's not too surprising. Do other members of our group who have done FF also show high percentages of Scandinavian ancestry?

Hi Gwyneth,

Your question is a very good one about the Family Finder myOrigins results.

Things to remember:

1.     Y-DNA test only tests the paternal line (males only)

2.     mtDNA  test only tests the maternal line (males and females)

3.     atDNA (aka. FTDNA’s “Family Finder”) tests all the rest of ones ancestry.  All of your grand parents, cousins, ggggrandparents etc. (males and females)

Everyone’s Family Finder results will be different even for family members.  We all inherit different amounts of DNA from our parents and ancestors.  The Family Finder test is looking for those portions that are passed ‘in common’ within ones ancestry down to each one of us.  It is not just looking at the yDNA or the mtDNA but everything else.

Look at the ethnic origins of the surnames within our pedigrees.  Are they all from the British Isles?  How many are from Southern/Northern Europe, Middle East, Far East, Asia, etc.?  This test will surprise us because it may pick up ethnic signatures that may predate our known ancestries.

The myOrigins program is looking to compare our DNA mixture to many different reference populations to see how each one of us compare to them.  Your father’s myOrigins results will be different from yours and anyone else in Duncan group ‘F’ because we all have a different mix of our total ancestors.  His myOrigins results are not based on his Duncan male ancestors only but everything from “His” father and mother.

A child will share some of the myOrigins results from each of their parents but not at the same proportions and definitely not all DNA.

The short answers is; we would not expect a man in Duncan group ‘F’ to only have myOrigins results from the British Isles within the Family Finder test. Some my have the greatest percentage from the British Isles but that is because of the totality of his ancestor’s ethnic makeup.

Thanks for the question.

Hi Tim, Gwyneth and all,

As Tim stated, the FF provides results from the paternal and maternal sides.  My FF origins are 93% Western & Central Europe, 4% Finland  Northern Siberia & 4% Central/South Asian.  My mother is English and of course my father is Scottish.  My origins from the 23andMe test which I got back about a month ago are about the same.

Speaking of 23andMe, I got a second cousin match from Arkansas, meaning we share a great-grandfather.  With the help from a few people, we were able to find her great-grandfather (and mine).  From there, we were able to find who I believe is my father (of course a Duncan).  I am still trying to verify
a few things, but as they say, the DNA doesn’t lie!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Wayne
