After about a 6 week delay, the new dull knife releases are finally
here and ready to ship. This new batch features the return of the
dull knife "Songwriter Series" with 7" releases from Daughn Gibson and
Zachary Cale, as well as the debut 7" from Hamamatsu Tom.
Daughn Gibson has been gaining quite a bit of notoriety lately with
the release of his LP "All Hell" on the White Denim label, as well as
shows in NYC, Philly, and his performance as Chaos In Tejas. Imagine
an amalgamation of Lee Hazlewood, Magnetic Fields, and Scott Walker.
The A-side "Lite Me UP" is the jam of the summer, and is one of the
finer songs to ever be released on this humble label. The first 100
copies are hand-numbered and packaged in silk screened chipboard
Arigato paks with 3 photo variations adhered on the back cover. There
are also 100 copies on grey marble vinyl in glue pocket 7" sleeves,
and the remaining copies are on black in the same sleeves.
The second new entry in the "Songwriter Series" comes from Brooklyn's
Zachary Cale. You may know Zach from his previous band Illuminations,
or his numerous solo releases. His past solo releases are often
melancholy, folky affairs that bring to mind Alex Chilton on Big
Star's "Third/Sister Lovers", but this release finds Zach writing the
soundtrack to your summer with a couple of bangers that have more in
common with the Kinks and Bruce Springsteen. Limited to 300 hand-
numbered copies packaged in silk screened chipboard Arigato paks with
3 photos variations adhered to the back cover.
You've likely never heard of Hamamatsu Tom, but maybe you're familiar
with Tom's other bands The Energy, No Talk, or his stint in Insect
Warfare. Forget What you know. Hamamatsu Tom is bluesy rock
featuring some of Houston's finest shredders, and would fit in nicely
on some label called Sub Pop circa 20 years ago. Tom is joined here
by Grandfather Child member Lucas Gorham, as well as former Fatal
Flying Guilloteen drummer John Adams. The B-Side is a cover of CSNY's
"Almost Cut My Hair", which I dare declare better than the original.
