When it comes to sight-seeing and shopping in Rome, there are plenty of options. However, the Eternal City's abundance of resources does not only consist of museums, archaeological sites, and designer boutiques. If you're searching for academic resources and literature, you will be happy to know that Rome is also home to a multitude of bookstores, including many English-language bookstores, or bookstores with a significant English-language section. Whether you are looking for a textbook for one of your classes, a classic novel, or the latest bestseller, chances are you'll be able to track it down in one of Rome's many English-language bookstores.
This cozy bookstore was founded by an Irish expat, and has a great selection of new releases and classics alike. Its helpful staff and variety of options makes it one of the city's most famous English bookstores. Not only do local expats and English-speaking tourists shop here, but JCU students do as well! The Almost Corner Bookshop is located right in the heart of Trastevere, less than a 5-minute walk from JCU's Guarini, Tiber, and Critelli campuses. If you are an English major at John Cabot, or enrolled in any English literature courses, chances are your required reading will be available at the Almost Corner Bookshop.
This quaint, second-hand bookstore is also located in Trastevere. Head across Viale di Trastevere to explore a variety of books from every genre and in every language (with a huge English selection.) The Open Door Bookshop has been run by the same family for over 40 years, and their cozy, old-fashioned style and eclectic decor give the space its wonderful charm. Stop by to peruse the shelves and discover a literary treasure for a very low price!
Located next to the Spanish Steps, the Anglo American Book Co. has a modern feel and a wide variety of genres. You will most likely find your textbooks and academic reading here. The Anglo American Book Co. is most used by JCU students when purchasing required texts for classes, but their collection extends far beyond textbooks. They also carry a wide range of English-language novels, non-fiction, classics, poetry, and more.
If you're looking for a huge, multi-level, American-style bookstore in Rome (complete with caf!), then La Feltrinelli is the place to go. La Feltrinelli has over 100 bookshops around Italy and also sells music, video games, stationery, and more. Although it is an Italian company and the majority of their books are in Italian, they do have quite an expansive selection of English language books at most of their locations. There is even a separate La Feltrinelli International near Piazza della Repubblica that specializes in books in English and other (non-Italian) languages.
Another larger bookstore to check out is Borri Books, located inside Termini train station. This top level of this three-story shop consists of English-language literature, new arrivals, and independently published works. It's a great place to kill time while waiting for a train, or to even spend the afternoon browsing through their extensive shelves.
Last but not least, don't forget that JCU's Frohring Library is also a great resource for all John Cabot students! If you need to do research for a project, or simply want to enjoy some literature without actually buying the book, take advantage of what is available to you free of charge. JCU's library has over 32,000 volumes, from books to multimedia items, as well as online databases (e-journals, e-books, and reference tools). The Library staff is on hand to help you find anything you may need.
The historic Libreria Studium in San Marco (Venice), has been taken over by The Merchant of Venice and completely renovated following a new concept. The relaunch of the offering strengthens its vocation as an international bookshop and it is enhanced by a unique olfactory library.
Studium is spread on two floors and is located between St Mark's Basilica and the famous Bridge of Sighs, in the heart of the most famous and monumental area of Venice.
Studium offers selection of over 10,000 volumes with a special focus on Venice and its history but also including a wide selection of fiction and children's books, art catalogues and especially titles in English, French, German and Spanish. Besides, we can find a section dedicated to the imaginary traveller Corto Maltese drawn by the great Venetian master of comics Hugo Pratt. In addition, the Bookshop offers high quality stationery exclusively developed for Studium and produced by Cartiera Artigianale Toscolano with themes related to Venice and in particular to the Marciana area.
On the second floor a lounge area welcomes Italian and international fiction, before a highly original olfactory room featuring a Perfume Section with several texts on the subject as well as a large Perfume Organ with over 100 raw materials catalogued as an ancient herbarium, also used for olfactory courses.
The Merchant of Venice's retail team conceived and curated the installation project, inspired by London's historic bookshops with influences that recall the iconic elements of the brand and of Venice.
Marco Vidal, owner of Studium and The Merchant of Venice says:
The entire new Studium celebrates books and culture, and does so in a welcoming style, offering reading and reference spaces on the second floor as well as courses, presentations and meetings: a bookshop in the heart of Venice, in St. Mark's.
The aim of the Studium bookshop is to promote culture in Venice and for the cultured traveller, who will find content, a warm welcome and stimulating interaction through courses, reading groups, presentations and a knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff.
It is also a point of sale of the future, because it is experiential and not at all replaceable with online sales. It celebrates books as well as the study of perfumery, our family brand speciality.
We promote the Venetian Art of Perfumery through the study of historical sources and olfactory training with courses at different levels. Studium is the perfect place to share the philosophy that animates The Merchant of Venice, that of being a brand of cultural value.
The aim is to provide a bookshop that brings the local community together through book groups, and collaborations with local schools and community organizations. The shop premises will be in Turbine Hall B and has an events space that can be used for launches, author talks, workshops, art and photography exhibitions. There will also be an area in the shop to display photos and artifacts from the Power Station.
The majority of the costs of the new opening are being covered by the owners of the Power Station and by Stanfords shareholders. They are also being supported by publishers large and small whose books will be stocked. However, there remains a gap between cash in hand and what is needed to operate successfully for the first year so a new crowdfunder is in place to help to close that gap.
While many have already pledged to offer support and make donations for no reward other than supporting independent bookselling, in addition Stanfords have assembled a wide array of rewards for you to select from in return for your contribution. Some examples of the rewards available include dedicated signed copies of books, local guided tours and special maps.
Stanfords has been given the opportunity to open a neighborhood bookshop in the newly renovated Battersea Power Station. With the help of our crowdfunder we need your support to build our bookcases, fill our shop with books and hire great staff. Join Michael Palin, Peter Ackroyd and Levison Wood in supporting our new venture.
