This is a gentleman I did not have the pleasure of knowing for very long in our two individual lives.
He was, however, for a short time, someone who voluntarily worked and suffered along with me every day, within an elbows reach, to prepare to go to war in service to our country. As Marine Corps officers we each went to Vietnam, served honorably, returned home, without acknowledgment, and built our lives.
Neither he nor I were joined by many other aspiring young men or women leaders of the time, including the late VP who is reported to have said about not serving " I had better things to do with my time". Nor several Presidents including Clinton and President Trump who, despite military school, had sore heels.
Rest in Peace Alan. Semper Fi. I am honored to have served with you.
