Some of you may have met Ray Eurquhart - a long-time friend to many of us in Durham - during the Vigil Reunion in 2018. He was an active participant in the labor panel and was there with us throughout.

We learned today of his passing on March 30 and saw this lovely remembrance that was posted this week on Facing South. See links to the article, my Tweet and an obituary.

Thank you for letting me know, Reed. I remember Ray well. I first met him when I was doing healthcare organizing in Durham back in the 1970s and would see him from time to time in downtown Durham. He was a force in the community. His voice will be missed. Julia

Reed,

I appreciate your sharing some remembrances of Ray.  I apologize for not letting you and Tami know about his passing.  He was wonderful on many levels, as you know, and we will miss him a lot.  His family and friends organized a virtual gathering to celebrate his life … it went on for almost 3 hours, with many lovely statements from people who knew Ray at all stages of his life.  For folks who did not know about Ray or his life and work in Durham and beyond, I’m attaching a story from our alternative weekly The Independent which talks about Ray’s life in honored him as one of our community’s heroes.  I’ll also attach the letter to the editor that I got published the week before his service.

pax,
Wib

Reed,

Thanks for these thoughts, which are not too late at all. People will be mourning Ray for a while to come, and he will be calling down from his lively corner of Heaven, “Don’t Mourn – Organize!”

For the group, have attached what I posted on Facebook on March 30. Reed just found my post after the remarkable virtual memorial event of April 28, and commented on it.
