Jack once told me that in the 60's he was hated and ostracized by many at Duke for his determined efforts to integrate the student body. He also said that when he was on the city council (65-69) members of the Klan would often show up at council meetings and, dressed in their full regalia, stand at the back of the room with their arms crossed. They wouldn't say anything, but the message was clear--we are watching you.

Jack and Joan both marvelous, and both Duke and Durham are much better places for their efforts.

Thanks, Arnie--what a wonderful tribute. So good to see him at your collective 70th birthday bash, and to talk to him about Joann and what an impact she had on some of us back in the day with the farmworkers' boycott, her prison reform work, and political activism in Durham. We were so fortunate to have them in our lives.

Jack Preiss gave many gifts to Duke and to Durham.  One was to inspire and contribute to a long SI article titled “The Timid Generation” about Duke’s complacent student body.  It appeared just 3 1/2 weeks before Dr.  King was killed.

I’ve wondered if this piece contributed to the Vigil’s intensity.

That’s not an accurate picture of pre-Vigil Duke. That “pretty blond minister’s daughter” (sic) was not the only activist on campus. (Was Mary Earle’s father a minister?) The author had not read any of Birkhead’s editorials, (or the issue that had “One Penny Life” that had been censored out of the main floor of the Student Union on the front page. Had not been to any of the open forums on the main quad and heard Doug Adams and many others denouncing the atrocities and injustices of the day. Had not attended the riveting and popular Symposia of the era on topics like “A Question of Values” and “Concepts of the University.” The political pot was simmering and a lot of people contributed to the boiling over that followed. Somebody please update us on the Concerned Alumni. d.

Reminds me of articles I've read about succeeding generations of college students: "Why are they apathetic?" But when they do protest, "What's wrong with them? They're acting out of their sense of entitlement. What do you expect?" Mostly, I remember being overwhelmed with assignments, behind from day one till semester's end. That burden of responsibility definitely put a damper on extracurricular political organizing. Still, I found the time to raise $90 for Gene McCarthy's campaign after the New Hampshire primary, going door-to-door in York House, which had been solidly pro Goldwater, just three years previous
.
While the SI article is written in a pleasingly breezy style, it reflects the typically patronizing opinions about the South that still pervade the media and much of mainstream culture even today. We in Appalachia, see this as a virtually indispensable theme when national media occasionally focus their spotlight at us.

Not to mention the weekly lunchtime picket at the West Campus bus stop
in support of Local 77.

I agree with David that the article was inaccurate in many ways. That said, it was a hot topic of conversation in the "freshmen" dormitories, and "timid generation" made it into one of the many verses of We Shall Not Be Moved sung on the quad once the Vigil got underway.
