Terrific article, Mark, but I'd add one name to your roll call of heroes: P. D. East, the publisher of the Petal Paper in Petal, Mississippi.  Here's a link to a brief introductory article about him,  and this lampoon of the Citizens Council that he published should give those unfamiliar with him a pretty good idea of where he was coming from.
