Wordstudy integrates phonics, spelling, and vocabulary instruction to teach word patterns. This developmental approach uses hands-on activities to teach word recognition, which in turn provides a stronger foundation for both reading and writing.

Students striving to learn English must contend with arguably the largest word bank in the world. English consists of a very small number of frequent words, and an extremely large number of infrequent words. The 100 most frequent words account for almost 50% of the words in a typical text. The first 5,000 account for almost 80%. The remaining 100,000 plus words account for the remaining 20%. (Graves, 2009)

1. Providing rich and varied language experiences:

We learn many words informally just by being immersed in a fertile vocabulary environment. This includes hearing complex texts read aloud and hearing rich discussions.

In this five-day course for teachers, deepen your understanding of the alphabetic linguistic system and learn how to teach for phonological awareness, phonics, word structure, vocabulary, spelling, and word analysis skills in grades K-8.

Sometime during the summer of 2021, I saw a tweet from Mike Ochs, a staff developer for the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, about a new vocabulary curriculum he was developing. I was intrigued and signed up to receive updates when the curriculum was ready to go.

Once Isabelle successfully completed the first Word Love unit, I reached out to Mike to schedule a time to talk about vocabulary instruction so that you could get a better sense of what the curriculum offers.

Children need to develop deep understandings when they learn new word meanings so they will comprehend texts and become competent oral and written communicators. Thank you for mentioning Wordsmyth (kids.wordsmyth.net). We are a very small group who have a huge challenge in making easy to use dictionaries useful in vocabulary study. Our dictionary has an integrated thesaurus. We appreciate Two Writing Teachers for the attention to vocabulary in writing.

I signed up for this over the summer and then we started school online and I could not make it all work- now that we are back in person I am determined to give it a go! I am teaching fifth grade this year and we are loving words, so I am pretty sure it will be a hit. Thanks for the nudge!
