The IMPAC Dublin Literary award is given to one book each year, chosen
by a panel of Dublin City librarians. It is a highly, highly
prestigious award--I really cannot stress this enough. The winners are
consistently shortlisted for Pulitzers after receiving an IMPAC, and
their titles skyrocket on reading lists and bestseller charts.
Consequently, the book that our club selected this month is the 2007
IMPAC winner Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson. :)
If you want to put your finger on the pulse of 21st century
literature, I highly suggest checking out the 2008 IMPAC longlist.
Dublin City librarians are huddled in cafes, libraries, pubs and cozy
fireside armchairs around the city reading these books as we speak,
and now you can too.
Check out the list--if you find a gem, keep it in mind for our next
book club meeting.
