Hi, I don’t really remember where we are with the Philadelphia aspect of this, but a program affiliated with A.A.L.L. has come to my attention, which would seem to fit the bill exactly. I another of our Research Librarians, Kate Wilko, will be participating. If you have not heard about this already, here is the information that I have: Careers in Federal Law Libraries, Saturday, July 23 (1:30-4:30) at Drexel. I will let you know details as I learn them.

Hello Linda,
Thank you for being understanding concerning our scheduling constraints. We were expecting around 6 people would be interested in going, but definitely no more than 10. To make the most of our DC trip, we are attempting to schedule another tour to coincide
with the S.Ct visit. Once we're able to establish a time frame that works for both the S.Ct. and the other organization, I will supply you with some potential dates and we can go from there. Additionally, Tim mentioned that you were going to attend SLA and/or
AALL and, since you will be in Philadelphia, I was wondering if you would be willing to meet with our group just to discuss law librarianship in the federal government and other avenues of employment in Washington DC. Your insight would be invaluable and
we would greatly appreciate the opportunity to learn more about the field.
Sincerely,
Mark Popielarski

Hi, Mark,
I understand that August would be bad given the schedule. September would work for us, earlier in the month is better as they close the Courtroom for renovation toward the end. As far as notice, with a large group, the sooner the better so that we can arrange a full tour. The minimum notice would be a month.
Sincerely,
Linda C.

Dear Ms. Corbelli:
Tim Siftar forwarded me your contact information so that I could touch base with you concerning a tour of the Supreme Court Law Library. It sounds like August-early September is a better time to visit. Our school operates on a quarter system and summer finals/break is in August. We were thinking about scheduling another Washington DC trip during the fall term and early September could definitely be a possibility. We really appreciate your willingness to help schedule a library tour. If we are able to visit DC in early September, how much advance notice would be needed? Thank you for all your help in this matter!
Sincerely,
Mark Popielarski

Hi, the Librarian said that August or September would be best for a large tour and potential presentation to a group. If only a few students were coming this month, I might be able to talk to them, and someone should contact me about the specifics at least a few days before they arrive to make sure. Anything over 7 students would present problems logistically without additional prior planning.
Every day there are Courtroom lectures and a film that they can attend without reservations. Also, please note that we know the Court will be open next week even if the government shuts down, but do not know beyond that.
Please keep us apprised of any dates for a trip in the late summer or early September – in later September the Courtroom closes for preparation for the new term, so you might want to avoid that.
Sincerely,
Linda C.

Hi Linda –
Thanks for your reply. The students would enjoy working out a face to face time to meet with you when you are in town for conferences. They’re probably tracking that AALL meeting already, but I haven’t heard details yet.
As for their trip, it turns out they’ll be at least sightseeing at the Supreme court on either April 19th or 26th and have faxed a formal request to the Marshal of the Supreme Court (Pamela Talkin) about attending while oral arguments are in session. I’ll just mention this in passing because you did say it was a challenging time of year for you, and they can focus on a fall date if they want to visit your library.
Otherwise, let me get them thinking about hosting a talk here around those conference dates you mentioned and we’ll see what can work!
Thanks again!
Best,
Tim

Hi, yes I do remember our meeting, and I used to have your card on my desk, meaning to call you. Our building is coming off an eight year renovation, and I’ve moved 4 times, so it has somehow disappeared.
I will run the idea by the Librarian, Judith Gaskell and see what she thinks. We do entertain groups such as this, but I will tell you that the spring is problematic as the Court ends its term and finishes working on the hardest cases. Early fall, before the Court begins its term on the first Monday in October, is usually good.
You may already be working on this, but the annual meeting of the American Association of Law Libraries is in Philadelphia from July 23-26, and there are usually ways for students to be involved, although I am not sure exactly what is offered this year. I will be attending this meeting, as well as the meeting of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic July 14-17 in your city. Perhaps I could meet a group around those times – I will know more about my specific plans at the end of the month.
Thanks for the offer,
Linda Corbelli

Dear Linda Corbelli,
It may be a stretch to recall our chance meeting on a bus to the train station after the last SLA national conference in DC. But we chatted briefly and I inquired about the potential of you speaking to Drexel University’s student chapter of SLA someday about your professional experience at the Supreme Court Library.
It so happens that several students in our student chapter have an interest in law librarianship and are organizing a day trip from Philly to DC either this spring or in the fall. Their current plan includes a visit to the Law Library of Congress, but had room for another stop. That’s when I recalled our chance meeting on the bus.
If it’s not a great imposition, I would enjoy knowing if your library can entertain a brief visit by a group of between 8 and 15 students from the Library Science program here at Drexel. This would be at some time and date convenient to you. If for some reason that’s not possible, I’m sure they would enjoy the opportunity to hear you speak in person or by way of a web-conference on any topic you might choose.
Thanks for any consideration you can afford these librarians-in-training and future SLA colleagues.
Best,
Tim Siftar
