Hi, we have a Max 4048 running 5.0Ap11 that we use for general dialin
and router to router connections. Because we use Radius and SecurID,
we're set up to use PAP authentication (Ethernet->Answer->PPP
Options->Recv Auth=PAP). We have one client who wants to connect to us
with a cisco router. Unlike all of our other connections, the client
wants to use numbered interfaces on his cisco. I added an entry to the
radius file that looks like

remote-rtr Password="xxxxxx"
Ascend-PPP-Address = 199.33.161.84,
Ascend-IF-Netmask = 255.255.255.192

The problem is that the remote cisco dials and connects, but doesn't go
any further, and eventually disconnects. My syslog shows entries like

Jul 7 05:27:28 erie.iplenergy.com ASCEND: call 63 CL 0K c=185 p=10
Jul 7 07:22:58 erie.iplenergy.com ASCEND: call 68 CL 0K c=185 p=77

The docs say that this means the progress was either "Call is up" or
"LCP is in ACK Sent state". They don't say what cause code 185 means.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to where I should be looking next?

Hi,

We just had a similar problem (from the sounds of it anyway). It was
between a CISCO 1003 (IOS 11.2.3) and a MAX 400x series (6.1.3).

1. Be sure the CISCO has at least IOS 11.2.14 installed, earlier versions
were broken.
2. Be sure that since Ascend can't do bi-directional authentication that
you use the string that negates that 'feature' on the CISCO, I think it's
something like "ppp auth pap callin" or some such thing, I'm not near the
unit right now but if necessary I can get it for you.

It took about 8 hours to come up with this answer between getting CISCO and
Ascend together on the phone, (CISCO being more responsive might I add) I
hope this helps.

Best Regards,
-bh
