Well, just got in to find our Ascend MAX 4000 (641xxx)
with K56Flex modems (upgrade) has just burnt up from
an apparent electrical fire!

We keep our server room around 65 degrees... and fans
blowing across all of our MAX units... but, apparently,
this doesn't help.

All of our MAX units have been purchased around a year
or less... the initial call to Ascend at 9:00 a.m. CST...
has revealed that we may have to buy a replacement!?
What's the deal?

I have seen numerous posts in this list... about MAX 4000s
burning up... and sales people from Cisco, etc. ALWAYS tell
me this when they call-- "Hey, you know those MAX units are
KNOWN to catch fire.. you should consider a Cisco solution".
or "you know Ascend doesn't handle a network load as well
as Cisco."

If it is suggested we have to "purchase" another unit...
as it was with my first initial phone call to Ascend...
to replace a unit that apparently has a flaw in its
design... we're going to look elsewhere for our network
needs.

I'm waiting on a Ascend RMA call back... they get in
around 10:00 CST.

We got K56 upgrades for our 19 Max4004s....we were told of a power supply
issue with 400Xs with SN #s that were less than 645 I believe....
Ascend replaced all 19 for free......one of the old ones did end up
exploding b/4 we replaced it....what are you S/Ns???

Good Luck

We just received a call from the Ascend MAX
product support manager... around 11:45 a.m.
CST... he is helpful and is working with us.

Our MAX 4000 that smoked... has a serial number
of 641xxx... the old modem modules (that we
replaced) were like 644xxx... but, the unit
was upgraded to K56flex at the end of last year.

I've found out that if you don't have a support
contract from Ascend, you'll have to wait 10
to 15 days to receive a replacement unit.

If you do have a support contract, then your
eligible to receive an advanced replacement.

Our situation was similar. Check the fans, that was the issue they brought
up with us. If they only have 3 fans, they are prone to burning up. (One
of our really old ones only has a single fan.)

We had 3 or 4 fry before getting them replaced...

Yes... our MAX 4000 has only 3 fans... we're suppose
to get a replacement very soon... (hopefully).

We had a similar situation with a 4004 that went out (wouldn't boot) just
about 11 months into operation. Similar result with Ascend, if you wanted
overnight replacement, you had to pay a HIGH core fee, or go on contract
even while the unit was *in warranty*. Fortunately for us, we had another
local ISP that had shut down services and agree'd to "rent" us their unit.
Maybe that's business someone should be in! As far as 10-15 days return,
once RMA'd... that didn't count weekends, so it should be 2-3 weeks! and
they took every bit of that time to get us the unit back. Since that time,
the same Max4004 - now out of warranty - burned up.. Appears fans were the
first culprit, 1 of the small fans shorted, took out all the rest of them
on the 12 Vdc circuit, took out the power supply, without blowing it's
fuse, but did blow the main line fuse eventually. I'm still working on
trying to get that unit back online myself, replaced all the obvious parts
(fans and +5 -5 +12 -12 power supply), and still not working yet.. I sure
could use a rental unit if someone had them available! Till at least I can
get an estimate from Ascend on futher repairs required. Are there
"alternative" resources other than Ascend themselves? Or companies that do
rent out spares till repairs can be accomplished?
