Hi All,

With the proliferation of generative AI and other "tools" that can be used to plagiarise or obfuscate academic impropriety, have there been any thoughts around the inclusion of AI detection tools or plagiarism prevention?  There have been some recent embarrassment in the academic community from obvious instances of plagiarism, so I imagine this topic has piqued the interest of editors and curators alike.  Obviously one tries to catch this stuff before it gets published, but things can get missed.  For this reason, it would seem that a layered approach that included plagiarism detection and AI detection might gain some traction.

Any thoughts on this or how it might be implemented using an API?

All the best,
Mathieu

Hi MP

I don't have an answer for you but need to know if you already have an active subscription for plagiarism services like https://www.turnitin.com. Such solutions come with ways to interface with external systems like Moodle (LMS).

You could then piggyback on such to get a submission to DSpace get checked first before deposit. I have seen such requirements on learning management systems and not DSpace though.

Also note that plagiarism checker are far from being gatekeepers for AI generated content.

Regards

Hi Gustav,

Thanks for the response.  Yes, we use Copyleaks for our plagiarism detection.  I figured I would see if anyone else has had the idea to integrate plagiarism and AI detection into DSpace before I start writing my own.  It seems like an obvious thing to integrate into repository software.

Anyway, I'll do some investigating and see what I can come up with.

All the best,
Mathieu

How does the Copyleaks price compare to Turnitin?
