Interface not selecting uploaded thumbnails for display

Hello all,

I'm using DSpace 7.6.3.  We've been trying to manually upload thumbnail images for display.  For some strange reason, the uploaded thumbnails appear in the record for some materials, while for others, the IM (generated) thumbnail appears.

For example, here's an item showing the manually uploaded thumbnail:

What we have tried:

(1) Deleting all the generated IM thumbnails (I know, they just regenerate when the media job runs again)

(2) Setting the manually uploExaded thumbnail as Primary Bitstream for the Thumbnail bundle.

(3) Checking the authorizations for all thumbnail images (they're identical in the record where it displays and where it does not display, ie, where manually loaded thumbnail does appear:

(4) Uploading a thumbnail that works in one record to a different record (does not work in the latter)

Please let me know if you have any suggestions, I'm a bit stumped.  Thank you so much for your help!
