All,

As this has been asked a few times on lists, I wanted to ensure this good news is highlighted.

Today, Symplectic announced a new release (v6.8) of their RT2 tools which integrates directly with DSpace 7.x repositories: https://www.symplectic.co.uk/symplectic-elements-product-update-release-v6-8/

Thanks to the Symplectic team for the quick integration!

Tim

Note that v.6.8 allows for harvest-only from a DSpace 7 repository. Deposit is planned for v6.9, due mid-July.

Hi Tim, all,

Regarding full support, I have also had confirmation from the Symplectic team that deposit is coming in v6.9.

For those interested in DSpace v7 compatibility with the current RT2 version, we have been testing whether it works (we are using 7.2.1) and so far I can report from our initial testing that:
So far the deposit functionality works as before, the same for differential harvesting. We are running into issues when harvesting large collections, where for large collections (lots of bitstreams or very large bitstreams) the DSpace API is taking a very long time to respond (> 5 mins). Surprisingly enough, we don't experience this in our current production setup using DSpace v5.10, for the same collections. I don't think is down to an incompatibility with Elements as it uses the same endpoints, and thought it would be useful to post here.

Hi All,

Updating this thread with the latest info (as of Aug 2023) for any institutions using Symplectic Elements RT2 with DSpace 5 or 6 and looking to upgrade to DSpace 7.

Starting from version 6.9, Elements has full harvest and deposit support for DSpace 7 using the new JSON API. In particular:
  • Enabling the deprecated XML API is not necessary.
  • The SWORDv2 endpoint is no longer needed, since all deposit operations can be perfomed via the new JSON API.
Some configuration and crosswalk changes are needed but should be fairly light-touch in most cases. For details, see:
https://support.symplectic.co.uk/support/solutions/articles/6000259052-repository-tools-2-upgrade-rt2-dspace-integration-to-v-7-x
(N.B. accessing this link requires a Symplectic support account. Log in or register an account using your institutional email address.)

Some special notes:
  • If upgrading from DSpace 5.x to 7.x, note that the change from integer IDs to UUIDs requires an extra job to be run on the Elements side. Please consult with Symplectic before performing the upgrade.
  • If you are using the RT2 Automated Metadata Updates functionality, this continues to be supported with a connection to DSpace 7. However, using RT2 Automated Metadata Updates and DSpace Authority Control at the same time is not currently supported, due to conflicts arising from the methods that the two systems use to update item metadata automatically.
All the best,
Ben Heartland

One extra note from our experience: if you’re on an older version of Elements 6.9.0, you’ll want to patch to the latest 6.9.0 patch release to avoid an issue with DSpace 7 deposit licence handling.
