Hello DSpace community,

We would like to clarify the behaviour of the item counts on Community and Collection pages, particularly for restricted/embargoed items. More specifically, it has been brought to our attention that the item counts that appear in the Communities & Collections page will show the total items, including those that are fully restricted/embargoed (e.g., items that should be visible to admin only). When clicking through to the Collection results, the expected number of results appears, but the number is higher on the Communities & Collections page. The Collections page search results are correct (good as this means the restricted items are not appearing to an unintended audience) but the number on the Collections landing page is somewhat misleading.

Example: when not logged in, Communities & Collections page shows 3 items (including 1 that is fully restricted) but the Collections page shows 2 item results.

We are curious if this discrepancy is a bug or simply how the Community/Collection count badge works in DSpace - that is, it shows a count of all published (archived) items in the badge, regardless of present authorizations?

Note: We also ran the index-discovery command manually for this Collection but did not notice a change in the numbers after doing so.

Thanks (and apologies if we missed this reported on either the DSpace or DSpace-angular GitHubs!)

Hello Julia,

As far as I can tell, I think that's true that the default behavior for those item counts is to include all archived items,  including those with access restrictions.
Based on this query that the item counts draw from and this update to that logic, the default is to include all archived items with the exception of Withdrawn or Non-discoverable items, but authorization doesn't seem to be a part of that logic.

If anyone is more familiar with this part of the codebase and the above is incorrect though, please let us know! Otherwise I can see how that may be confusing for users; if amending those counts based on access restriction is something you'd like to see implemented, feel free to submit a ticket and the community can look into whether that may be possible.

Thanks! Best,
Lia
