Hello there follow users. I am having a hard time creating thumbnails for the existing books in my repository. But any new books being uploaded are automatically given a thumbnail. I would also like to make it so that users can view books on the browser directly and not just automatically download books.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Wanangwa.

Hi Wanangwa,

To add a thumbnail to an existing item, you'll need to upload it as a bitstream under the Thumbnail bundle (See Edit Bitstream documentation).  Is there a particular step in there that has not been working?
Alternatively if you need to auto-generate thumbnails for many existing items, you could look into the media filters script.  There are several filters for creating thumbnails based on PDFs.

Last, there is not currently a PDF viewer integrated with DSpace.  There is an implementation that is under review, and could theoretically become a part of the 10.0 release (but that is still unknown, not guaranteed).

Hope that helps you get started,
-Lia

Hi Wanangwa,

you can also trigger the media-filter (responsible for generating thumbnails) for a single item or a collection/community from within the DSpace web interface:

- Go to “Processes”
- Create a new process by clicking “+ New”
- Choose “filter-media”
- Add a parameter “--identifier” to identify the item or collection you want to generate thumbnails for by their handle.
- Optionally you might restrict the media filters with the “--plugins” parameter

Best regards,
Martin
