creation of sub-collections under a collection
----------------------------------------------

Key: DS-1162
URL: https://jira.duraspace.org/browse/DS-1162
Project: DSpace
Issue Type: New Feature
Reporter: Shixing Wen
Priority: Major

There is no choice to create sub-collections under a collection. I'd like to see that sub-collections are available under a collection, just like sub-communities under a community. The availability of sub-collections will accommodate better the structure of serial publications such as a journal. If so, we can use a collection for the journal title, a sub-collection for a volume, and a further-down sub-collection for an issue, and each article in an issue as an item. Without this capability to add sub-collections, some people are using a community or sub-community instead. But logically, a community should be a group of people, not a collection of items.

Mark Diggory commented on DS-1162:
----------------------------------

A community is not really meant to be a group of people, it's a group of subcommunities and collections. I'd advise that the grouping of journals/issues/articles is one approach that is tractable at this time.

However another more effective approach is to utilize discovery facets and expose journal and issue as facets, then if these are set in the item metadata, they can be filtered on in the search ui allowing users to view the set of articles based on thier own choices, these can also be exposed on the collection home page navigation menu.

Storing issue and journal information in the item metadata also gives the benefit that it is exposed via OAI in a manner that the detail is always carried on the item metatdata records.
