Good day DSpace Community,
I hope you are doing well.
I am experiencing an issue with our DSpace 9 repository and would appreciate your assistance.
When I create a new item, I am able to complete the metadata fields without any problems. However, when I reach the step to attach the document (bitstream), the upload fails and I receive the following error message:
"Upload failed."
The file is not attached to the item, which prevents me from completing the submission.
Has anyone experienced this issue before or knows what might be causing it? I would appreciate any suggestions on possible causes, troubleshooting steps, or configuration settings that I should check.
Thank you in advance for your time and assistance. I look forward to your suggestions.
Kind regards,
Cynthia Mpofu
Dar Cynthi,
If you’re receiving this error even though you’ve successfully uploaded files before, there could be two reasons. First, your file size may be too large. If you’re using NGINX, check the file upload size limit. If that’s not the issue, your logs may be bloated—check your disk space and clean them up if necessary.
Best Regards,

I’m assuming that you can usually upload files and that this is a unique occurrence. If you’ve never been able to upload, that sounds like a DSpace configuration error and our colleagues on the list can advise you.
Here are some things that have helped me:
This does happen to me sometimes. If you’ve tried uploading a file a couple of times and each time has failed, I’ve found that saving the deposit for later, then opening it from MyDSpace and trying to upload again usually does the trick.
Another reason why it might fail is that it exceeds the file size that is allowed by DSpace. There’s no helpful error--at least in DSpace 7.6--when that happens, just “Upload failed”. If that’s the case, zip and compress the file and try again.
You can also try to upload a different file, just to make sure that there is nothing wrong with the file that you are trying to upload. I’ve had a few fluke-y files that refused to upload. If you can open the file and re-save it, it can help, but not always. In that case, I try to get a new version of the file to upload, or I’ll zip the existing file into a new file and upload the zipped file.
Good luck!!
