Dear All,
4Science will partner with ORCID for an amazing online webinar on October 11th at 4 PM (UTC). During this insightful session, we'll showcase a live demo of our successful ORCID integration into DSpace under TORE (https://tore.tuhh.de), powered by DSpace-CRIS 7.
Our CTIO, Andrea Bollini, and Oliver Goldschmidt, the repository manager at TUHH, will co-present this webinar.
Don't miss this opportunity to dive deep into the world of DSpace and ORCID integrations.

All,

First, I do want to say up front that this looks like an excellent webinar. I wish 4Science, TUHH and ORCID the best of luck with this webinar & recommend anyone interested in ORCID integrations consider attending!

Nonetheless, as I've had many questions on this topic recently, I wanted to clarify that this webinar covers new ORCID integration improvements added only to DSpace-CRIS via a "Global Participation Fund" grant from ORCID.  More information on this work can be found in 4Science's DSpace-CRIS wiki at: https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSPACECRIS/Improvements+to+the+Login+Flow

The webinar announcement (posted to this dspace-community list) is accidentally misleading, as it talks about a "successful ORCID integration into DSpace under TORE, powered by DSpace-CRIS 7" (italics added by me).  But, at this time, these ORCID integration improvements (built for TORE and funded by ORCID) are only for 4Science's DSpace-CRIS product.  The registration page provides a clearer description of the scope of the webinar, which will also include a comparison of DSpace 7's ORCID  integration with the newly funded improvements in DSpace-CRIS 7.

I wish to stress that I would love to see these new improvements come back into DSpace itself, as they provide great enhancements to the ORCID Integration feature (contributed by 4Science) in DSpace 7.3: https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSDOC7x/ORCID+Integration  4Science has already said they hope to find time to donate this new work back to DSpace in the future (but may not be able to prioritize it until DSpace 9).

So, if these ORCID improvements are of interest to your institution and you want to see them added to DSpace sooner,  please consider attending and/or talking with 4Science or ORCID about how to make that happen. I believe all of us would like to see that happen but prioritizing its porting to DSpace may require additional funding or volunteers.

Thanks,

Tim

Hi Tim,

As you yourself noted, in the webinar we will talk also about the DSpace-ORCID integration, highlighting the differences and what can still be improved looking to DSpace-CRIS. The webinar aims to reduce the gap for the ORCID integration in DSpace. Unfortunately, as you know some features like configurable entities were not considered enough stable in DSpace to enable them out-of-box and this makes enabling the ORCID integration a bit more difficult.

We like to remind that DSpace-CRIS is open source and the same DSpace license is applied to the DSpace-CRIS codebase. A lot of features have been contributed and are going to be contributed back by 4Science, other service providers and volunteers in the community to the main DSpace.

That is why we encourage people from the DSpace community to attend, to learn and see the features that can be applied to their DSpace repository.

As the leading developer for DSpace, with almost 100k dollars' worth of hours donated to the community in 2023 (https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSPACE/Service+Providers), we strive to empower the DSpace community and keep the platform up-to-date. We would like to discuss more about what is really needed by the community: the concept of Configurable Entities introduced in DSpace-CRIS back in 2006 took almost 10 years to find its way in DSpace. We hope that increasing the general awareness about available open-source solutions applicable to DSpace, the whole community can help us to speed up the innovation process in DSpace.

Best,

Susanna

Hi Susanna,

Thanks for your thoughts, and I do agree completely that this webinar would be useful to DSpace institutions.  The reason for my prior email was because your webinar advertisement was accidentally stating that the recent ORCID integration improvements for TORE are being made in DSpace.

See this text of your advertisement:

"During this insightful session, we'll showcase a live demo of our successful ORCID integration into DSpace under TORE (https://tore.tuhh.de), powered by DSpace-CRIS 7."

The concern I had was that this talked about the "ORCID integration into DSpace under TORE".  But, as we both know, the new work done for TORE is for DSpace-CRIS not DSpace.  So, it'd be better to say "ORCID integration into DSpace-CRIS 7 under TORE" (or something similar).

I know this was just a simple mistake, but I've had several people ask me questions about these ORCID improvements for TORE that were funded by ORCID.  There is a misconception that these ORCID improvements are going directly into DSpace itself. We all do agree that it'd be wonderful to see it get back into DSpace as soon as possible.  But, as we know, at this time these improvements are specific to DSpace-CRIS as documented at https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSPACECRIS/Improvements+to+the+Login+Flow

Thanks & best of luck on the webinar,

Tim
