Greetings

I'm a new user making an installation of dspace for my college and they are insisting that I should configure dspace to disable PDF files download, can this be done? I've read some documentation and various questions of the sort and, as I understand, this opposes dspace's original purpose and is adviced against.

So, if it can be done, and you may have directions for me, please, I'd love to read them.

But, if this can't be done, is there anywhere in the documentation that says so? I'd really like my repository to be open access so if I can prove that this is not possible, my repository will be implemented as is.

Thank you very much and sorrry for my weird english.

You could create a collection, set the DEFAULT_BITSTREAM_READ to a group that has no users.  All bitstreams that are associated with items that are deposited into this collection will get this restriction.  By default they go into the Anonymous group.  But say an item is deposited that has a pdf file and a txt file, both files will have restricted access to the group you associated with the DEFAULT_BITSTREAM_READ permission. This approach will work fine if the items deposited only have pdf files associated with them.

If you use the itemimport script you can designate different groups for different bitstreams in the same item.  Here is the documentation for that.  Look at the section on DSpace Simple Archive Format  where it talks about how to prepare the contents file.

There may be another way, but this is what comes to mind.

Hope this helps.
