How did you not succeed?

o  DSpace accepted the materials, but some of the metadata are missing;
o  DSpace accepted the materials, but the metadata are wrong;
o  DSpace rejected the materials.  What were the error messages?  Were there associated messages in the DSpace log files?
o  DSpace threw an internal error.  What was the error?  What messages did you find in the DSpace log files?
o  Something else happened that was unexpected.  What happened?  Were there messages about it in the logs?

What procedure or command were you using when the failure occurred?

Hi Bhala,

Could you describe the method you are using to move your content from EPrints to DSpace?

Where you using the DSpace Simple Archive Format for migration? https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC6x/Importing+and+Exporting+Items+via+Simple+Archive+Format
Or maybe some other approach?

If you could let us know on this list what you've tried, and what errors or problems occurred, then we'd be better able to help you.

Sincerely,
Tim

Hello Bhala,

Unfortunately, DSpace requires very specific input formats, and cannot simply import any file that you export from EPrints.  Unfortunately, that "dc.txt" file is not a format that DSpace will understand.

It looks like you are using the DSpace "Batch Import" option (from the JSPUI), and selecting that the format is "CSV" (comma-separated values).  However, that "dc.txt" format is not a valid CSV file. CSV files are spreadsheets of metadata, and DSpace expects to import a CSV that has columns which correspond to valid metadata fields in DSpace.  So, if you wish to simply import metadata, you'd have to transform that "dc.txt" file into a valid CSV that DSpace will understand.

The CSV format that DSpace understands is the format that is exported from the Batch Metadata Editing tool: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC6x/Batch+Metadata+Editing

Keep in mind though that, when importing a CSV, you can *only* import metadata -- no files will be imported alongside that metadata.

Another option is to use that same "Batch Import" option, but to upload a "Simple Archive Format" package (as a Zip file).  This format allows you to import both metadata and files.  See the documentation at: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC6x/Importing+and+Exporting+Items+via+Simple+Archive+Format#ImportingandExportingItemsviaSimpleArchiveFormat-UIBatchImport(JSPUI)   More details about the Simple Archive Format can be found at: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC6x/Importing+and+Exporting+Items+via+Simple+Archive+Format

I'll admit, I don't know which option is better for you, as it's unclear if you are migrating metadata-only content, or if you have metadata + files that you wish to upload into DSpace.  If you provide more information about what you are trying to migrate, others on this mailing list might have more specific advice on how to either create a proper CSV (for metadata-only import) or create a Simple Archive Format package (for metadata + files import).

Finally, if you want someone to simply do the migration for you, you also could consider contacting one of our DSpace Service Providers.  Our Service Providers are experts in migrating content into DSpace, and you could contact them for a quote for doing this work on your behalf.  Here's the service providers list: https://duraspace.org/dspace/resources/service-providers/

Sincerely,

Tim
