SWORD integration question

With SWORDv2 (SimpleIngester), if I try to upload metadata first followed by the resource content (or vice versa) I get an error on the 2nd upload - "The item has already been archived". Updating content/metadata seems to be the primary case for choosing SWORDv2, but Items seem to archived by default when creating them -- so what I am missing? Is this a situation where some custom code may be needed?

With METS it's possible to upload metadata and content in one call. Is that possible for the other ingesters? I see SWORD supports a "multipart/related" request -- does DSpace?
