Dear Repository Administrators/Managers,

I would like to ask if there are standards in assigning file names to your uploaded content and what are your best practices. I've come across this resource: https://guides.lib.purdue.edu/c.php?g=353013&p=2378293 and http://www.exadox.com/en/articles/file-naming-convention-ten-rules-best-practice.

In other institutions where I helped set up their repository, I also introduced the file naming conventions for their thesis and dissertations. Please see example FNC below.

For journal articles, I suggest this format:
JournalName-YYYY-vxx-nxx-SurnameFM-FLT

This is mostly for 'internal' use only but is very helpful in organizing files.

I would like to ask the community if what are your file naming conventions when it comes to books, book chapters, articles, newsletters, whole journal issues, etc.? I assumed it is easier to file name materials that have sequential numbering like volume and issue number but I find it hard to apply to other types of materials. Would you mind sharing your experiences and best practices? I'm planning to implement file naming convention in our institution. I cringe every time I saw any of there characters in the file name: ! # $ % & ' @ ^ ` ~ + , . ; = ) (

Thanks in advance and best regards,
euler
