IMRE Seminar on : “Interfacial Coordination Programming of Functional Molecular Networks”

Speaker : Prof. Hiroshi NISHIHARA ,Department of Chemistry, School of Science, The University of Tokyo, Japan

Host : Dr.  CHI Dongzhi (DG)

One of the final goals of the research on molecular electronics is to control electron conduction in molecular wires and networks at will by combining appropriate molecular units. Here Prof. Nishihara will  present interfacial coordination reactions to synthesize electro-functional nanowires and nanosheets.

A facile bottom-up method has been developed to fabricate molecular wires of bis(terpyridine)metal oligomers on the gold surface based on the Au-S bond formation or on hydrogen-terminated silicon surface based on the Si-C bond formation. The electron conduction properties of internal molecular segments as well as the resistivity at the electrode-molecular wire junction and the terminal hetero-redox molecular connection were quantitatively analysed to evaluate the total performance of the molecular wires.

Monolayer nanosheet materials have attracted much attention because of their unique physical and chemical properties, which derive from their two-dimensional (2D) nature. π-conjugated nanosheet comprising nickel bis(dithiolene) units are synthesized. A liquid−liquid interfacial reaction using benzenehexathiol in the organic phase and nickel(II) acetate in the aqueous phase produced a semiconducting bulk material with a thickness of several micrometers.  A single-layer nanosheet was successfully realized using a gas−liquid interfacial reaction. Modulation of the oxidation state and the electronic conductivity of the nanosheet was achieved using redox reactions.

IMRE, Seminar Room 2

RF w/ COMSOL MultiPhysics Workshop

This workshop covers the usage of the RF Module for simulating Maxwell’s equations in the high frequency electromagnetic wave regime. Applications in resonant cavity analysis, antenna modelling, transmission lines and waveguides, periodic structures, and scattering will be discussed. The workshop will require individual participants to bring their laptop as  A COMSOL Trial License will be installed for them during the workshop to allow them to evaluate the product.

Speaker : Dr. Zhao Xin, Senior Application Engineer, I-Math Pte Ltd

Dr. Zhao Xin received his PhD from the Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) in Mechanical Engineering. His research covered the computational mechanics and materials, numerical methods, and composites. Dr. Zhao previously worked as a research scientist and published more than 30 papers with international journals. Now he is a senior application engineer  assisting COMSOL users with their multiphysics modeling needs.
