Tue, 10 Jun 14

03:30 pm – 04.30 pm

IMRE, Seminar Room 2

IMRE Seminar : Recent Advances in Porous Carbon Electrode Materials and Fundamental Science of Supercapacitor Devices

Speaker : Dr. Li Li Zhang, Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences, Singapore

Host : Dr. Zong Yun (SI)

In this talk, Dr. Zhang will begin with a brief description of the working principle of supercapacitors, and present some strategies followed in achieving high-performance electrode materials for supercapacitors, describing also what fundamental science has been done, and what further understanding is needed. The current understanding of the limitation of interfacial capacitance by quantum capacitance in atom-thick carbon electrode materials, through recent experiments and theory, will also be presented.

Wed, 11 Jun 14

02:00 pm – 03.00 pm

IMRE, Seminar Room 1

IMRE Seminar : Exciting Catalytic Oxidations: Flow Reactor Studies

Speaker : Prof. Steven L. Bernasek, Department of Chemistry, Princeton University, USA

Host : Dr. Johnson Goh (AC)

Flow reactor studies of catalytic oxidation of small molecules have been carried out using two separate approaches. These two approaches will be presented and discussed by Prof Bernasek. The first focuses on the internal energy state of the products of small molecule oxidations on platinum surfaces. The second approach considers the surface of the catalyst in the investigation of partial oxidation of propene on gold nanoparticle catalysts.

Fri, 27 Jun 14

10:30 am – 11.30 am

IMRE, Seminar Room 2

IMRE Seminar : Solubility, Structure and Surfaces in Ionic Liquids

Speaker : Prof. Rob Atkin, Discipline of Chemistry,  The University of Newcastle, Australia

Host : Dr. Sean O’ Shea (AC)

Ionic Liquids (ILs) are a subset of molten salts, distinguished by having melting points below 100 °C. Low melting points in ILs are brought about by weakening electrostatic interactions between the ions and hindering their packing into a crystal lattice.Neutron diffraction measurements have revealed that many ILs have a sponge-like (bicontinuous) nanostructure; IL cation alkyl chains and ionic groups are segregated into domains throughout the bulk liquid. Varying the structure of the ions changes way inter-ionic forces are expressed, which leads to changes in nanostructure.
