Upcoming Research Seminars and Events

Mon, 7 Oct 13

2.30pm – 3.30pm

IMRE, Seminar Room 2

IMRE Seminar on "A Focused Laser Beam: Useful Tool for Nanoscience"

Nanoscale materials have attracted great interests in recent years. Low dimensional such as nanoparticles, nanowires, nanorods, nanowalls, nanosheets, and nanojunctions or networks are an important category of nanostructured materials with great potential as important components for nanoscale devices with various interesting functions. In this presentation, we will present our efforts in the studies of hybrid nanomaterials with the emphasis on how the focused laser beam can be used as/for:

  • Micro Manipulation Tool: Optical Tweezers
  • Micropatterning and Microstructuring Tool
  • Micro-Architecturing
  • Micro-Photocurrent Studies
  • Micro Photochemical Reaction
  • Micro light-House!
  • Micro-Actuating Tool

Speaker : Prof. Chorng Haur Sow

Host:   Dr Teng Jing Hua (PF)

Mon, 14 Oct 13

10.30am – 11.30am

IMRE, Seminar Room 1

IMRE Seminar on "Science And Technology Of Conducting Polymers : My Journey"
Polymers were traditionally known to be insulating materials. In the early days of 1975-1980,  when my journey began, polymers were made more and more insulating so that very thin films used in the multilayer electronic circuits could give good isolation and low leakage current. With the discovery of poly(acetylene) in late 70’s came a surge of interest in inherently conducting polymers (ICP). As of today, conducting polymers are “in things” for many industries and fertile field for innovation.  The presentation describes the complete journey through how polymers can be made conducting and functionalized and utilized in sensors, actuators, electrochromic devices, etc.

Speaker :  Prof.Dr.S.Radhakrishnan
Host: Dr Sonar, Prashant (SI)

Tue, 22 Oct 13

10.00am - 11.00am

IMRE, Seminar Room 2

IMRE Seminar on "Biomaterials for Regenerative Medicine"

As stem cell based therapies rapidly advance towards clinical applications, there is a requirement for cheap, easily manufactured, injectable materials that can be tailored to carry stem cells and impart function to such cells. We have recently developed a number of multicomponent hydrogel systems that, by way of their composition and gelation behavior, provide significant flexibility in terms of their mechanical property slates, their biofunctionality and their utility as injectable materials.

Speaker : Prof Justin COOPER-WHITE

Wed, 6 Nov 13

10.00am - 11.00am

IMRE, Seminar Room 2

IMRE Seminar on “One- and Two- Dimensional NMR Experiments in the Solid State for Assignment and Structure”

The enormous success of solution state NMR in deciphering structures of molecules of chemical and biological interest has been largely due to experiments that could map proximities of atoms both through scalar and dipolar couplings. Similar approaches to study molecular structures in solids have been evolving and in recent years significant advances have been made for the case of several partially ordered and fully rigid systems.

Speaker : Prof K.V.Ramanathan

Host : Dr Pallathadka, Pramoda Kumari (AC)

13 Nov 13

10.00am - 11.00am

IMRE, Seminar Room 2

IMRE Seminar on "Multi-Functionality of Reinforced Polymers and Composite Structures"

Multi-functionality is the combination of different properties in one material so as to make it suitable for the use in applications in which different loading conditions must be sustained. Besides the mechanical load bearing capacity, other properties such as thermal stability, electrical conductivity or wear resistance can be of importance. In many cases, polymer based composites are the material of choice, since they can combine the intrinsic properties of the polymers (like light weight, corrosion resistance or toughness) with the unique properties of their reinforcements (such as electrical conductivity, wear resistance, or high mechanical stiffness and strength)

Speaker : Prof Klaus Friedrich
