Hello,

Thank you PJ for all of your hard work to get us to this point!

I wanted to share the following insight from Councilor Hardt regarding the next steps in the process of seeking city recognition. She wrote:

"Congrats on getting to the point of submitting for recognition. My understanding is that no votes will be taken at tomorrow’s meeting, but the item will be referred to the Legislative Matters committee, as is the regular process. I believe that there will also be a public hearing, through the committee. Given that tomorrow’s meeting will be the last Council meeting until late August (and no committee meetings will be held during this time), that will happen when the Legislative Matters committee meets again in the fall. Just let me know if you have any questions about the process."

So this will take a little longer than we thought. Sending letters of support is still a good idea, but now they don't have to be sent by tomorrow's deadline. Please see PJ's email below for how to send your thoughts to the City Council.

Best,
Louisa

Hello Neighbors,

I'm excited to share that we are on the agenda to be officially recognized by the City Council this Thursday!

For anyone who wants to follow along, you can attend in-person, or remotely via Zoom here. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM, though at this point I do not have any information as to when our item will come up for discussion. Additionally, I was warned by the clerk that this will likely be an anticlimactic referral to the Legislative Matters committee.

I'd like to encourage our membership to submit written public comment in support of our request for recognition. All of us have worked hard together to craft an organization that can represent the population of Davis Square, and this is an important step in giving us a voice in the city.
You can submit public comment via email to: publicc...@somervillema.gov. Public comment emails must include your full name, your ward or address, and the item you are commenting on (ID# 26-1165, and/or "Davis Square Neighborhood Council requesting formal recognition")

This is a big accomplishment for our organization, we should all feel very proud of how far we've come!
PJ Kim-Santos (and the rest of the board)

In case it helps, here’s a flow chart that Councilor Wheeler put together to help show how legislation moves through the City Council: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/benjiwheeler/somerville-city-council-flowchart/main/flowchart.svg
