The Hackintosh I built with a friend over 10 years ago is finally giving up the ghost and I need a new home desktop computer.

What advice do people have about where/how to get a new PC?  Are there stores/resources anyone can recommend? Brands or stores you'd avoid?

Here's some more info on what I'm looking for:

- It will mainly be used for my kids' games (*cough* Minecraft *cough*), but I'll still occasionally use it for 3D graphics and video editing stuff.
- I want a desktop so it stays in our living room and doesn't get carted off to one of the kids' rooms.
- I want to get a good to higher-end PC since I tend to upgrade once a decade.
- It'll use Windows (Sorry, Dave!)
- I kind of enjoyed custom assembling the Hackintosh, but that was over 10 years ago and when I look on Newegg I get a little overwhelmed by the variety of choices. (Do people still recommend Newegg?)

About 5 years ago I got a laptop from Dell that I've been very happy with. Has anyone else had good experiences with them?

Check out pcpartpicker.com.  They have a LOT of good builds there, and it handles a lot of the compatibility and "will this physically fit" kind of issues, as well as giving you a parts list and links to order them.

2nd the pcpartpicker.com

Choose approx price range, choose a base build from their build guides, tweak as youd like, and check back daily since it tracks prices on multiple sites. I wasn't in a big hurry so picked up parts over a few months when prices were right.

Your part list can have parametric filters, so you don't have to choose a brand or specific part.  You can choose the specs.. then it will show the item that is the best price for those specs each day or as prices change.

I thought we were friends. :(

Should decide on what family of processor and GPU you want. I recently built a pretty fast PC using an AMD CPU and Ryzen GPU, have been pleased with it. I'll look up the specs on what I got.

Here's a quick list of what I got, based on what was a good "bang for the buck", watching reviews and personal preferences at the time.

Motherboard: ASUS Prime B550M-A
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5800X
GPU: ASRock AMD Radeon RX 7600
Storage: Samsung 990 EVO Plust 1TB
RAM: 32gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4
Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S
Artic MX-4 thermal paste
PSU: Corsair RM650 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular

Of course I'm running Linux. Steam has made it so most games just work with no hassles, but if you do non-Steam games it can be interesting.

I used an old ATX mid tower case I've been re-using since I bought it from Chris Johnson's shop back before the turn of the century. I think this is the 3rd or 4th time I've re-used that case.
