Does anyone have any recommendations on where to get a small quantity of rough cut or surfaced hardwood lumber for a good price?

I'm looking for maybe 50 bd ft of 8/4 walnut.

I don't know about price, but the Woodsmith Store in Clive should have what you want.

People here have previously recommended Liberty Hardwoods in Ankeny.

I got some good walnut from Tim Hutcheson out in Marshalltown (Hutcheson Lumber & Millwork). He's a one-man sawyer/kiln operator. You'd want to call first to see what he has on hand. I was buying 4/4, but I found his prices on that to be worth the drive outside of the metro.

2169 180th St
Marshalltown, IA 50158

There's also this fellow that's bringing in lumber and selling it out of a storage facility on the south side. I've not dealt with him, myself, though:
Looks like his price on 8/4 walnut is $10.49/bdft. Which is about the price Woodsmith was charging for their 4/4 last time I went in there.

Hope that helps.
Lucas

Oh. Also, I know Woodsmith and Rick Hutcheson will give you a discount if you're a member of the DSM woodworkers club: http://www.dmwoodworkers.org/
I believe they're both 10% off.

The Woodsmith Store is obscenely expensive compared to Liberty Hardwoods.  I bought several hundred board feet of 6/4 maple at Liberty for around $2.50 / bd ft a year ago, vs over $6 / bd ft at the WSS.

Des Moines Hardwoods is the best I've found. It's a guy that sells out of his garage basically intending to undercut the big stores (woodsmith store). Great prices.

Does Liberty sell to hobbyists only looking for a few board feet? Ive known about them for a while, but their website basically tells hobbyists to stay away. So I did, ha ha.

Walnut also shows up on Craigslist pretty regularly, and prices are almost always lower than WSS. In part because I think WSS is all S4S, right?

Most of the WSS wood is rough.

Walnut shows up really cheap in Iowa because we have more black walnut than any other state.
