is this thing on?

I'm doing the cyber defense track for a hyper stream club, and I'm looking for a presentation for the whole group that would be engaging. the other years I've done this, it's been for a dedicated sysadmin/cyber defense focused subset, but now I need to do something for the whole group, which includes podcasters, designers and developers. I've looked at SANS and MS-ISAC, but didn't find anything great.

does anyone have any ideas for what would be encouraging for fence-sitters, and not totally boring for the disinterested? Im thinking about a more in-depth version of the general online safety tips they usually get - a here's why you should do these things

Maybe do a demo of Recon-NG?  You could target their school, Facebook, Twitter, and other stuff they use. Recon is something a lot of people can wrap their minds around.

Another option would be to demo TAILS and talk about surveillance issues...how they affect people overseas, how they affected people in Post WWI Europe and Post WWII Russia and what's going on with the U.S. today.

I say to forget about rehashing the online safety tips or doing a Critical 20 walkthrough. People just aren't interested on generalities.  Be different, be specific and be willing to screw things up.

Recon-NG would be interesting.

Another possible approach is to tell non technical stories about cyberdefense. The DefCon style talks that combine humor and real stories helped me get interested in infosec. There's one about a guy who had his Mac stolen with a remote viewing app installed on it and he was able to track it down by the IP and the thief's Facebook info. The actual presentation may be NSFW, it's been a few years since I've seen it. Http://www.YouTube.com/watch?v=U4oB28ksilo

There's also a very interesting article from Vanity Fair about what they call the first cyber war. You can find that here: http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/2013/07/new-cyberwar-victims-american-business

Demonstration of tools like SET (Social Engineering Toolkit) to show kids just how easy it is to be fooled into allowing an attacker into their computer.

Dave Kennedy was just on Kaie Couric's show and created an eye opening experience for the woman who believes she and her kids are absolutely secure
