What are the Tracking Algorithms that allow us to call this DSI instead of DTI?

Dear DSI Studio staff member or Mr. Yeh,

Interpret this as a Theorical question.

For background, I'm a master's student and in my thesis I will use DSI studio on a dataset of 60 patients. It contains default DTI, T1, T2 and FLAIR.

"Diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI), a newly developed MRI technique, affords the capacity to map complex fiber architectures in tissues with sufficient angular resolution by imaging the spectra of tissue water diffusion. By contrast, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), the currently widely used technique based on the 2nd order tensor model, obtains an approximation of the complex diffusion, and provides only one global maximal direction corresponding to the primary eigenvector for each voxel."

My question is if I only have DTI data, how can DSI studio "transform" it into DSI data?

Or in other words, what are the techniques in the Tractography algorithm that clearly state "this is DSI and not DTI"?

Is it the "beyond-DTI” methods such as GQI, QSDR, RDI" ?

Thank you in advance,

Best regards,
Manuel

I don't have a quick answer to the question here.

I would suggest going through the tutorial videos at practicum.labsolver.org

This will help explain all.
Best
Frank

Dear Frank,

Indeed, watching the tutorial videos answered my previous questions.

Basically, DSI Studio allows us to choose between 3 "fiber resolving" methods: DTI, GQI and QSDR.

However, you state that "DSI Studio works with DSI".

Are you using the term "DSI" interchangeably with the 2 Model-Free options (e.g., GQI or QSDR), or is there an fourth option that allows to use the DSI (Wedeen, 2005) model?
Why does DSI Studio name got "DSI" in it?

Thank you in advance,
Manuel

No.

or is there an fourth option that allows to use the DSI (Wedeen, 2005) model?

"DSI" can mean two things. One is the DSI acquisition, or DSI data, a.k.a grid sampling in the q-space. Obviously, DSI Studio can apply GQI or QSDR to DSI acquisition/data.

The second meaning is DSI reconstruction, which computes dODF from q-space signals using iFT and radial integration. GQI is an analytical solution of DSI to provide a more precise estimation of ODF (IEEE TMI Yeh 2010).  In that view, GQI can replace DSI in term's of numerical analysis.

Why does DSI Studio name got "DSI" in it?

Because it was first designed to process "DSI data" long ago in 2005.

Hope this helps,
Frank
