Hi Wangchho,

Tell the solar NGO that we will put in some Intel-made special devices
some time next year. If they are unwilling to put in the solar panel
now because you don't have the devices now, then forget them. We
don't need them. It doesn't make sense for me to put in a computer
there right now. We don't need a general computer. It will end up
being nothing more than a toy. The cost of a computer is about the
same as that of a 150 watt panel. So it doesn't make sense for us to
put in a computer that we don't need just to get a panel of about the
same price. When the time comes, I'd rather spend my own money to buy
a panel of my own.

Re: VCDs, there's a way to make VCDs from the videos. But I'm not
sure if that's necessary. What's the plan with VCDs? You will need
TV + VCD player + solar panel to play them in the village. If you
don't have those things now, it doesn't make sense to make VCDs. And
it doesn't make sense to acquire those things either because TVs and
VCD players are no good and we will put in better things in the
future. I said before that if you want to temporarily show some
videos to your village, play them on your computer. If your computer
is unable to play them, then it needs to be fixed. In the simplest
case, it might just need a codec, which I can guide Kush to install.
In any case, the proper solution is unlikely to be VCDs. And in any
case, I wouldn't worry too much about seriously showing videos to
village schools yet. Showing a little bit of sample should be
sufficient for now. The main thing is still to make sure we are
producing enough good videos in Rani's school. We will worry about
how to play them in village schools later.

Kush, make sure you are consistently making three copies of
everything---three hard disk copies at all times.

There are two different kinds of CDs. One is a VCD format. One is
simply data CDs.

Making a VCD format CD takes a bit of trouble. Kush probably doesn't
know how to do it.

Making a data format CD is easy. You just burn our existing video
directly to CDs. Doesn't take any difficult effort. Kush can do it.
But such a data CD is unlikely to play on a VCD. It can only be
played on a computer. If your computer can't play the videos on a
data CD, the computer needs to be fixed. As I was saying, you might
need to install a codec, which I can help with.

Don't worry about the solar panel guys too much. If they agree to let
it stay, fine. If they want to take it away, fine too. I'll buy you
new ones later. Don't worry too much about putting TV and DVD player
there. Unless your TV is very small, 150w is not enough to power a
TV. So don't worry about the TV.

Hi Randy
Good to hear from you finally ! Just came from a meeting with Dr KN before I leave for Delhi on 3rd Jan. Its for my sons hand operation . The schools here closed - the govt. ones again for winter break . before that they stopped classes for the exams . We managed to squeeze in three classes this week before they close for the winters .So we made arrangements with a school in Chitwan District , where the schools dont close for winters cause its warmer there . Its three hours drive from here .
Three teachers are leaving on the 2nd to start shooting there for a week .They will have a nice holiday too at our resort Riverside Springs nearby . Thats how its working ! The second week will be covered by another set of three teachers .
Urvashis visit was fun and fruitful .We learnt a whole lot . My set up the free girls school soon in Shuvatara . Lots to do , with end of term work . Urvashi brought videos from Lucknow. They are good. Our teachers saw them , and made notes on the methods used. We are also going to make stories VCDs . The english ones need to be redone cause Im not happy with the books used and the materials and methods. i may have to shoot them myself.
The weeklong inservice for teachers was moslty spent on making lesson plans and presenting classes for Grade Three. by the teachers in different groups. We got some excellent interest and work done. The role play ideas  are really popular and we are going into it in a big way .
Thanks for the project its really interesting and useful for all .
Dr KN and I decided on making subject committees with our own and other good teachers from other schools . revamping the content , approach , materials and presenting to the govt as well as using it for our schools and the DSH schools.
Happy New Year . Where are you ? Long time no hear ?
Regards
Rani
Urvashi is sending a memorandum for us to sign and become Sister Schools . !! Ad then shell send some money for Kush and the teachers !
