Dr. Becoats presented the revised Magnet/Assignment Plan to the
Board. He proposed
1. making Lucas Middle a 70% home zone and 30% IB magnet
2. having only 8th grade at Chewning next year and reassign rising
7th back to their base schools as redistriced
3. phasing out WG over the next 2 years and not take incoming 6th.
There were lengthy discussions on all the issues, and board members
still had lots of questions about the details of the proposal, which
tells me it wasn't thought through all that well

the Board voted
1. Lucas will be a neighborhood attendance zone school, no magnet, no
IB
2. approved 8th only at Chewning next year
3. approved phasing out WG, even though there will probably not be
able to populate the school sufficiently the 2nd year, so they would
have to revisit.

Becoats proposed setting entrance standards for the 9th grade Hillside
IB program. Minnie and Nancy were against limiting access since some
kids will rise to the bar. Heidi had concerns that if kids are not A/
B students and have 3's on the EOGs, then they will not succeed and
why set them up for failure. Board passed the entrance standards as
recommendations for now, not rigid policy.

can't wail to see the paper tomorrow.

Gwen,
I am a parent of a sixth grader and have been following emails, attending meetings and emailing the board members about all of the issues with the first proposal. What a shocker to see such a short outcome. With that said, I am glad the board listened and slowed down.
I want to thank you for being the PTSA President and for all that you did to organize and lead the entire group. Your efforts do not go unnoticed.
